Math 135 - Preparation for Calculus - Fall '15

Prof. Mark Janeba

Our text will be Functions Modeling Change: A Preparation for Calculus, 4th Edition
by Eric Connally, Deborah Hughes-Hallett, Andrew M. Gleason
ISBN : 978-0-470-48475-3    Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

There will be nightly reading from the text.

Q: Is it expensive?

A: Yes, it's expensive (math and science texts always are).  You may want to save some money in the short term by getting the loose-leaf version (ISBN 978-0-470-91760-2), or an online electronic version - but you probably won't be able to sell those versions back to the bookstore at the end of the semester, so it's not clear how much money you'd save in the long run.

Q: Can I use the 3rd edition?

A: If you wish, but some of the homework problems are different, and that may cause you difficulties.  You'll have to take responsibility for dealing with that.
I assign homework problems using the 4th edition, and I can't tell you the corresponding problem numbers in the 3rd edition, even for the ones that are in the 3rd edition.

Q: Can I use an "international edition?"

A: If you wish, but I've had mixed results with international editions.  Some of them are exactly the same text, but cheaper.  Some of them have different problem numbers, etc.  You'll have to take responsibility for dealing with that and any other differences; I can't tell you what those differences may be.
