Math 138 - Statistics - Spring '16
Prof. Mark Janeba
Our text will be Statistics, 4th edition, by Freedman, Pisani, and Purves
ISBN 0-393-92972-8, published by W.W.Norton
There will be nightly reading and homework problems from the text.
Q: Will I need the text the first day?
A: Reading and homework will be assigned the first day, to be finished before the next class meeting.
Q: Can I use the 3rd edition?
A: If you wish, but some of the homework problems are different, and
that may cause you difficulties. You'll have to take responsibility for dealing with that.
I assign homework problems using
the 4th edition, and I can't tell you the corresponding problem numbers in the 3rd edition, even for the ones that are in the 3rd edition.
Q: Can I use an "international edition?"
A: If you wish, but I've had mixed results with international
editions. Some of them are exactly the same text, but
cheaper. Some of them have different problem numbers, etc.
You'll have to take responsibility for dealing with that and any other
differences; I can't tell you what those differences may be.
