UC Santa Cruz dean Stephen E. Thorsett will be next president of Willamette University in Salem. “The new president is a graduate of South Salem High School and the son of Grant Thorsett, Willamette University emeritus biology professor. ‘Willamette was a big part of shaping my early life and how I think about education and what's possible in a small college environment,’ Stephen Thorsett said Saturday.”

Willamette University's newest leader knows Salem well. “Thorsett already is familiar with Salem. He was raised in South Salem, attending Candalaria Elementary and Leslie Junior High before graduating from South Salem High School. In 1983, he left for Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. ‘I have always thought of Salem as my hometown,’ Thorsett said Saturday in an interview. ‘Even though I was born elsewhere (Connecticut), I felt that was an accident of birth.’”
