Greeting to Undergraduate Parents
July 1, 2011
Dear Willamette University parent:
It is with great pleasure that I join the Willamette University community today. Although I know many of you may not receive this message until after the Independence Day holiday, I wanted to share my excitement in being here as soon as I arrived.
For many months now, members of the Board of Trustees and Chair Steve Wynne, former president Lee Pelton, and many others have been working in support of my transition and orientation to Willamette. This groundwork has been tremendously valuable to me in the last few weeks, and I am especially grateful for the generous support during this period.
Although it has been hard to say farewell to the many friends my family and I made in twelve years in Santa Cruz, we have been deeply touched by the genuine warmth and enthusiasm of the welcome from the Willamette community. My wife Rachel and daughter Laura will be traveling back and forth between Salem and Santa Cruz for a while yet, but all of us are looking forward to meeting the greater Willamette family in the months ahead.
I look forward to getting settled and learning more from the university community as I begin to develop my vision and strategy for Willamette's future. In the meantime, I hope to have the opportunity to meet many of you on campus during Family Weekend (Oct. 14-16)!
With best wishes,
