Events to Honor Senator Mark O. Hatfield '43
August 11, 2011
Dear Willamette community,
In response to numerous inquiries about memorial events for Senator Hatfield, I wanted to share that, according to today's Statesman Journal, there will be two public memorial services to commemorate and celebrate his life and achievements:
- The first one is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, August 13th, at the Village Baptist Church, 330 Southwest Murray Boulevard in Beaverton.
- The second will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 24th, in the House Chamber of the Oregon State Capitol.
Senator Hatfield's son, Mark Hatfield Jr., told The Oregonian that the first event will focus more on his father's strong Christian faith and the second will focus on his public life and career. Out of deference to the family's wishes, Willamette is not planning a on-campus memorial service, but I encourage members of the Willamette community to attend one or both of these upcoming events.
In addition to those opportunities to commemorate him, I wanted to remind you of the Mark O. Hatfield Library's photo gallery on the library's main floor, exhibiting photos of Senator Hatfield's public life. There is also a condolence book for those wishing to offer a note of condolence to the Senator's family.
I also encourage you to peruse Willamette's terrific tribute website, http://www.willamette.edu/people/hatfield/index.html, which includes an online guest book where you can share thoughts and condolences. These will be compiled and shared with the Hatfield family. My thanks to the team from Web Development, the President's Office, Marketing Communications and the Hatfield Library for their efforts.
