Successful NWCCU re-accreditation
August 9, 2011
I am pleased to announce that we received word that the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) has reaffirmed Willamette University's accreditation on the basis of its Spring 2011 comprehensive evaluation and site visit. My sincere congratulations and thanks to everyone who contributed to this positive outcome.
As anticipated, the letter accorded Willamette both commendations and recommendations, as well as a few follow-up tasks, also anticipated based on preliminary conversations with the evaluators at the conclusion of their visit and also when we met with the Commission last month.
The Deans Council, with my oversight, will be guiding the University's follow-up effort and has already begun working with faculty and staff across all academic and administrative units to respond to NWCCU's requests and ensure future compliance with the new standards and time lines. Your continued support and engagement with this effort are essential -- and much appreciated.
NWCCU's letter of reaffirmation is posted on the Willamette web site, for those of you interested in reading it. However, I wanted to share this excerpt that, as a newcomer, I found particularly heartening:
"Lastly, the Commission applauds the University for creating and fostering a campus community environment that is lively, vibrant, and unifying such that students across the University appreciate the work of faculty and staff who demonstrate on a daily basis the essence of what it means to be part of a caring community."
I know from my own study of the accreditation materials and my conversations with the visiting team chair and others just how much work went into preparing for this review, and how many people were involved. I am grateful for your collective efforts and for this favorable result.
