ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS

Dean Jim Goodrich As I stood with Associate Dean Debra Ringold in San Francisco last month, on the occasion of our AACSB re-accreditation, I realized we have so many things to be proud of here at the Atkinson School. We were there to receive our certificate and to have our picture taken with John Fernandes, President of AACSB International – he started things off as we arrived on the dais with “Go, Bearcats.” Turns out his new AACSB staff member in Tampa is a graduate of Willamette University!

Of course the reaffirmation of our accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is a huge accomplishment for us. Other schools who were there to receive accreditation certificates included Stanford, UCLA, Temple, Washington University in St. Louis, and North Carolina-Chapel Hill. We were in good international company as well, with IAE Universidad Austral (Argentina), Keio University (Japan), Universiteit Antwerpen (Belgium) Management School and Kuwait University all represented. The AACSB now includes members from over 70 countries, though only 14 percent – less than 1 in 7 – of the universities giving business degrees hold AACSB accreditation.

With accreditation rules changing, more preparation is necessary – from selecting peer and aspirant schools, to writing and presenting data in the report, to arranging a visit. We had three distinguished deans – from Boston College, Rollins College and Shenandoah University – here for our campus visit in February. Their report had a tremendous number of positive things to say about our school. They particularly noted the support we receive here at the Atkinson School from business firms, alumni and our surrounding region. Thanks to all those Willamette Trustees, AGSM Advisory Board members, alumni, faculty, staff and students who contributed to our report and to our successful visit. All the work that you did before, during and after the team visit will help us to implement the team recommendations and continue to be successful in meeting our lofty goals.

As I participated in the alumni events and the Brownwater festivities this past week, it was fascinating to talk to so many of you, and to hear of your positive memories of our school and your fellow class mates. As we honor Marc Choate on the occasion of his retirement, we hear once again how valued our faculty are by past and current students.

Next week I will stand on the podium with President Lee Pelton and our MBA graduates. On May 12 we will induct many of them into our two honor societies. At that awards ceremony we will also recognize faculty and staff for their accomplishments during the year. These awards, along with those we will give out at our graduation, remind us of how much we have to be proud of. I hope these graduates will keep these memories -and keep in touch with us- as they become alumni of our proud institution.

FAMILY ADDITIONS
Jonathan Chappelle MM‘99 and Tanya Chappelle (Sutter) CLA‘95, MBA’99 welcomed their first child, Nathaniel David Beverley Chappelle, on February 5th, 2005. He weighed 8lbs 4oz. Jonathan writes, “Both Tanya and Nathaniel are doing well.” Jonathan has been working at Intel since he graduated from AGSM. In his current role, he manages a Finance team responsible for capital investment in their leading-edge technology development facility in Hillsboro, Oregon. “More importantly, Tanya is excelling in her new role as stay-at-home Mom!”

Emily Katherine Nick and Lori Jwayad (Both MBA’01) welcomed baby Emily Katherine on April 16th. Emily was born 6 lbs. 8 oz. Nick writes, “Mom, Dad and Baby are doing splendidly.” Nick is an IT Manager for Portland Public Schools and Lori is a forecasting analyst for Regence Blue Cross.



 

NUPTIALS AND ENGAGEMENTS
Andee (Andrea) Vassilaros MBA’04 is engaged to be married! Her fiancée and boyfriend of two years, Aaron Masonek, and Andee are planning to get hitched next April. “Details are still in the works! For now, we’re just enjoying the moment,” writes Andee.

UPDATES
Bradley King MAD‘76 has accepted the offer to become the new VP & CFO of Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), effective April 18th. Previously Bradley worked in the health care group Larson Allen Weishair & Co., where he specialized in “turnarounds.” Most recently he has been serving as interim CFO’s for health care facilities including OHSU.

Enrique Goytizolo MBA‘96 is currently working for Smiths Detection, which is one of the four business units of Smiths Group, a UK based company. Last January Enrique was promoted to Regional Sales Manager for South America. He reports to the Americas office based in Laval, Quebec, but he is located in Peru. Smiths Detection offers complete integrated solutions within the security sector and is a market leader, as are the other three business units of Smiths Group.

Rick Mockler MBA’78 has been elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington Government Entities Pool, a property and liability insurance pool for 800 municipal corporations in Washington State. He has also been appointed to the Joint Select Committee on Public Health Funding by the Washington State legislature.

Patrick Pine CLa‘74, MBA‘76, who is Corporate Benefits Manager for ESCO Corporation headquartered in Portland, will be speaking at the Annual Summit on Healthcare Cost Containment Strategies for Employers in Miami, Florida on April 28. This conference is sponsored by the International Quality and Productivity Center. His topic is “Imposing Regulatory and Legal Controls on Healthcare Providers”. He is also a panelist on the topic of “Consumer Driven Health Plan Design – Evaluating the Good and Bad Results.”

Mark C. Brown MBA‘03 graduated with his Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree from the University of Iowa on May 14, 2005. He is grateful to finally be done with his graduate education. In June, Mark and his wife, Amy, and two children, Holden and Liliana, will be moving to Rochester, MN, where Mark took a position as Administrative Fellow at the Mayo Clinic. Mark reports that he is very much looking forward to this two-year appointment, which will allow him to rotate through the various administrative and clinical areas at Mayo – including rotations in finance, human resources management, research, education, operations administration, hospital administration and other fun and interesting areas of the world’s preeminent healthcare organization.

John Goddard MBA‘84, employed by GlaxoSmithKline since 1989, was recently promoted to National Account Director. Prior to this promotion, John was a Regional Account Manager. He is married and has three girls ages 15, 13 and 11. The Goddard’s live in the Seattle metro area.

Daniel 'DJ' Heffernan Daniel “DJ” Heffernan MBA‘89 was elected Treasurer of the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association and to a second term on the Association’s Executive Board. DJ also became a certified Foundation Coach by the International Gaelic Athletic Association for Gaelic Football. He is starting a youth program in Portland Oregon and hopes next year to expand the program to also include Hurling. Hurling and Gaelic Football are the national sports of Ireland.
 

Ron Camp MM’92 recently published the following articles:

  • Camp, R. D. II, Anderson, R. B., & Giberson, R.. (2005). “Aboriginal land rights and development: Corporations and trust.” International Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship 2(2): 134-148.

The articles are part of a SSHRC funded research project looking into key factors of success for Aboriginal/Indigineous/Native economic development activities. These articles in particular looked at the importance of land rights as important attractors for investment by non-Aboriginal corporations and factors that lead to long-term success in Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal joint ventures.

Kim (Weil) Jones MBA’02 has recently accepted a new position as Human Resources Generalist with T-Mobile Wireless in Salem, where she will be working with Nicole Underwood M’03, who is also an HR Generalist at T-Mobile. “This is a great career development opportunity for me and will allow me to finally live and work in Salem after commuting to and from Salem for the past three years,” writes Kim.

Julie Weston MM‘95, JD‘95 is currently living in Seattle, Washington with her husband Ben Wolff. She is a partner in the law firm of Davis Wright Tremaine, a national law firm with more than 11 offices throughout the country and in Shanghai China and practice in the areas of mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance. Julie’s significant clients include Clearwire Corporation, Starbucks and Craig McCaw’s Eagle River.

Verus Construction, Inc. and President of the company, Gregg Leiss CLA’91, MM’92, are starting residential construction on their High Plains subdivision in Stagecoach, Nevada. The completed project will include 151 homes and 11 acres of commercial development, estimated to be completed within 4 years.

Jennifer Miller CLA‘97, MBA‘01, JD‘01 was recently elected Treasurer of the King County Prosecutors Association. She has been working for the King County Prosecutors Office since graduating with a joint degree in 2001. She looks forward to using the accounting skills taught to her by beloved professor Earl Littrell to balance the Association’s books.

Ron Owen MAD‘80 recently began a new job which was a promotion, to Human Resources Director for Universal Technical Institute in Deer Valley, Arizona the first week in April. Ron has responsibility for their Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, a campus with over 2,000 students.

Brooks Houser CLA‘85, MBA‘87, JD‘89 has recently been appointed to the Janus Youth Group Board of Directors. Janus helps 36,000 kids a year throughout the Northwest and has a budget of 20 million dollars. Brooks has been appointed to the Junior League of Portland’s board of community advisors. He has been a financial planner and regional president with Northwestern Mutual in Lake Oswego, Oregon for the last 10 years. Brooks lives in Portland with his wife Susan Houser CLA‘85 and three children Brooks Jr., Grant, and Claire; two dogs, two cats, two rats and assorted fish.

WILLAMETTE’S AACSB RE-ACCREDITATION IS OFFICIAL!!
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Logo It gives us great pride to announce that the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Peer Review Team’s recommendation for extension of accreditation has been concurred with by the Maintenance of Accreditation Committee and ratified by the AACSB International Board of Directors. The Accreditation Council confirms maintenance of membership of Willamette University in recognition of the Master’s Degree Program in Business, committed to quality enhancement and continuous improvement. This is a great accomplishment for the entire Atkinson community, as it involved a rigorous review of our processes, strategies and overall objectives. Help us celebrate this momentous occasion on June 9th at the event “30 Years of Milestones in Management Education,” to be held at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. ETHICS IN BUSINESS AWARD
Ethics in Business Award Logo After digesting extensive research reports prepared by teams of students in a required course taught by Professors Jennifer Roney and Steven Maser, the selection committee announced recipients for the 2005 Ethics in Business Award. The EIB program recognizes up to three businesses for their commitment to ethical behavior, corporate social responsibility, and environmental stewardship; a not-for-profit for ethical behavior, including fund-raising, and impact on the community; and an individual for creating an ethical work environment, ethical leadership, and personal values and actions that support integrity and ethics (for details, see www.ethicsinbusinessoregon.org). The organizations and individuals to be honored as exemplars are: New Seasons Markets, Norm Thompson Outfitters, and Rose City Marble; Self-Enhancement, Inc.; and David Underriner, Administrator at Providence Portland Medical Center. The Atkinson School partners with the Rotary Club of Portland, The Portland Business Journal, and the Samaritan Counseling Center-Portland in the EIB program. The recognition dinner, which last year attracted almost 400 business, government, and not-for-profit leaders, will be held at the Governor Hotel on June 15: reception at 6 PM and dinner at 7 PM. STUDENTS AND ALUMNI PARTICIATE IN VAULT BUSINESS BUZZ SURVEY
A giant “thank you” to those who participated in the Vault Business School Buzz book survey. Business School Buzz will be published in print and online at Vault.com. Presence in Business Buzz will help Atkinson increase it’s visibility and reputation, and help prospective students make key choices during the business school application process. The Atkinson School has worked with Vault in several capacities in recent years. STUDENTS PRESENT INVESTMENT FUND RESULTS

On May 4, 2005 student members of the Robert & Doris O’Neill Student Investment Fund delivered to the Advisory Board of the Fund a report on Fund activities during the spring semester.

In a well-structured and polished presentation the students described their analysis of countries, industry groups, and individual companies that they researched as potential investment picks.

The students reported that they settled on investments in a total of eleven countries or regions: the U.S., Europe, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Brazil, India, South Africa, Australia, Malaysia, and Chile. In the U.S., the investments were in financial services, information technology, and health care sectors.

All investments were accomplished through relatively recent financial market innovations, Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs, which are baskets of securities, usually representing a region, country, sector, or industry, and which trade on an exchange just like individual stocks.

Members of the Advisory Board asked students about details of their sources of data, analysis, level of confidence in the portfolio, and the quality of the learning experience they received working with real investment decisions and real financial risks. Students were unanimous in praising the educational value of this real-world experience.

The first four months of 2005 were a somewhat difficult period in world equity markets, and as of the day of the presentation the performance of the Fund showed a small loss of 1.95%.

The Student Investment Fund thanks Robert Jackman from the Salem office of the firm Morgan Stanley for filling in for Professor Michael Dothan who was on a sabbatical leave during the spring semester.

JAPANESE ATKINSON WEBSITE CREATED AS PART OF STUDENT PROJECT
As a project for the course Net Enhanced Organizations: Technology, Strategy and Implementation, Atkinson student Hideaki Azuma created for the first time, the Atkinson website in Japanese. See it at: www.geocities.jp/atkinsonmba/

The purpose of creating a website for Atkinson in Japanese, as stated by Hideaki, is to expand Willamette MBA brand awareness in Japan and to provide information about the program, American life, and other information to prospective Japanese candidates.

The website is registered on two famous search engines in Japan. (Currently, if you type Willamette MBA in Japanese using Goggle, it shows up in first place)

It is also registered on the home pages of the most famous GMAT and TOEFL preparation programs in Japan. The Japanese Atkinson site is listed alongside top schools such as Kellogg, NYU, Yale, etc.

Show-Biz Conference Logo Atkinson is participating in the Show-Biz Conference to build stronger partnerships in the Mid-Willamette Valley for potential graduate student projects, internships, and job placements. Dean Goodrich wants Atkinson to reach further into the community to build prosperous relationships for students, businesses, and organizations.

EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Mini-MBA Program: Developing New Business Ideas The Certificate Program in Transit and Community Transportation Management begins on May 16 at the Region 1 Building of the Oregon Department of Transportation in Portland. The second week of the program begins on June 6. Co-sponsored by the Oregon Transit Association and the Washington State Transit Association, the program has openings for four people. In October, Cascade Employers begins the second cycle of its MiniMBA program delivered by the EDC. The MiniMBA consists of six modules introducing the basics of management, from managing projects, finances and strategy to negotiating, developing new business ideas and leading. Business Women’s Forum Ends Year with a Bang!

The End of the Year Bash sponsored by the BWF was held on Saturday, April 23rd at Professor Lisbeth Claus’ ranch in Silverton, Oregon. They had a barbeque, games, and prizes were given out. Band of Brothers played live music at the event.

Atkinson Graduate School will be hosting a table at the Salem Chamber of Commerce Show-Biz Convention on Thursday, May 12th. Over 200 valley businesses under one roof – a spectacular showcase of products and services with something for everyone!

Brownwater 2005: a hit with the crowd
This year’s activities associated with Brownwater were well attended and a smashing success. The Brownwater festivities kicked off with a final retirement party for Professor Marc Choate on Thursday, April 28th. The party was held at The Oasis, a lively venue with the house band, Sassy, singing tunes such as “YMCA” and “Take this Job and Shove it” (featuring Choate on vocals!) In addition to dancing and karaoke, people were entertained by a slideshow of some of Choate’s greatest moments and a couple toasts made by faculty members to honor him. The G. Marc Choate Scholarship was also announced by Choate’s longtime friend and MC, Professor Mike Hand. $46,000 has been contributed so far to this scholarship by alumni and faculty members. Brownwater continued on Friday, April 29th with two coinciding events: a golf tournament at Salem Golf Club and a winery tour. About 35 people participated in the golf tournament, which began around 10:00 AM and continued until about 3:00 PM, with a reception at the end. Prizes were given to the team with the best score, worst score, and each male and female winner of KP and Long Drive. Morgan Stanley generously donated some of the prizes.

The winery tour was also a hit, with a full bus driving 30 people to 3 different wineries in the area: Eola Hills, Chateau Bianca, and Firesteed. Students enjoyed wine and cheese tasting and conversation with friends.

On Friday evening, the festivities continued with Casino Night, which was held at Mission Mill. Attendees enjoyed games of Poker, Blackjack and Roulette. The theme for the evening was 1920’s speakeasy and many students were dressed in flapper-style dresses and pinstriped gangster suit. After the gambling commenced, prizes were auctioned off by Professor Ken Murphy. Prizes included dinner at Morton’s Bistro, golf with Professor Ken Smith, a weekend getaway at Professor Fred Thompson’s cabin on Lake Detroit, among other things.

On Saturday, April 30th, the activities included a 10K run in the morning starting at Bush Park, a BBQ at the Atkinson school, and of course, the infamous Mill Creek float. No one was significantly hurt in the tumble over the waterfall, as some have been in years past.

All in all, it was a Brownwater to remember. Students, staff, faculty and alumni all agree that it was a weekend they won’t soon forget!

Bruce Gates Bruce Gates, Professor of Quantitative Methods & Public Management, has joined the Development Team at Change Companion, Inc. The Silicon Valley firm markets software designed to guide large-scale corporate change initiatives.

As Chief of Quantification & Visualization, Gates is responsible for developing forecasting tools and display dashboards that help keep managers and employees fully engaged and informed throughout the often long and complex process of effecting major change. Change Companion’s CEO, Ord Elliott, was a member of the Atkinson faculty during the late 1970s.

 

Fred Thompson Together with ’04 Atkinson alums Jessica Brown, Jason Page, and Ryuzaburo Yoshida, Bruce Gates (photo just above) and Fred Thompson published “Does Oregon Need a Rainy Day Fund? Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle,” in State Tax Notes, Vol. 36, No. 2, April 11, 2005: 123-129. The article concludes that borrowing beats rainy day funds on a couple of important criteria and is, in all probability, no worse on the rest. Mainly borrowing is cheaper. Besides, states that really need rainy day funds, like Oregon, cannot afford them; states that can afford rainy day funds really don’t need them. The article was based on research done for public financial management (GSM 632) by Jessica Brown, Katie Crocker, Jason Page, and Ryuzaburo Yoshida.

Fred will also participate in the Naval Postgraduate School’s 2nd Annual Acquisition Research Symposium “Acquisition Research: The Foundation for Change”, May 18-19, 2005 in Monterey California. Where he will chair a session on Financial Management & Budgeting and make a presentation on the Air Force Resource Allocation Process, a mechanism for translating long-range strategic plans into human resource and systems development programs and the spending commitments needed to carry out those programs.

 

Randall Donohue On sabbatical leave from his combined admin-faculty position at California Lutheran University, Dr. Randall Donohue CLA‘69 has enjoyed teaching marketing communications at Atkinson this semester. For Randall, the Willamette campus holds colorful memories. “I met my first really serious girlfriend here, and over 35 years we have explored a lot of the world together.” Randall married Ginny Grubb in 1969. From Oregon, the couple went to India as Peace Corp volunteers.

Randall reflects, “For two years we lived in a small village with no electric power or running water. Malnutrition and disease were everywhere, and our job was to convince people to grow and eat fruits and vegetables. It was tough and depressing and useful and incredibly interesting. That’s when I acquired my passion to use marketing for good social purposes.” There is an evident connection to Randall’s course at Atkinson, where among student projects was an excellent marketing plan for the new Birth Center at Salem Hospital.

After Peace Corps, the Donohues came back to the Northwest. Then in 1979, they moved to Singapore where Randall opened the State of Washington’s first overseas trade office. Later he joined the U.S. Agricultural Trade Office and led a team of managers and consultants marketing U.S. products and services in 14 Asian markets. He remarks, “We went to Singapore for two years and ended up staying for 20!”

The Donohues’ sons grew up in Singapore. Now, both are married and living in Oregon.

During his semester her at Atkinson, Randall admits driving from Salem to Eugene frequently to visit his baby granddaughter. “My sabbatical was for research, so I’ve been researching how best to make little Ella smile.”

NEW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR SECOND-YEAR STUDENTS
The Atkinson School has established the MBA Achievement Scholarship program for full-time MBA students who demonstrated outstanding performance in academics, leadership and service to the Atkinson School during the first-year of study. It is intended for students who did not receive scholarship assistance for the first-year of study. MBA Achievement Scholarships will range from $5,000 to $10,000. The first awards will be made for the 2005-06 academic year.

ATKINSON STUDENT CHAPTER OF SHRM EARNS THE SUPERIOR MERIT AWARD
The Willamette University- Atkinson student chapter of SHRM has earned the Superior Merit Award for the 2004-2005 school year. Winning this award demonstrates that the chapter has done an outstanding job of providing opportunities for growth and development to its members. 133 of the 430 active student chapters submitted applications. Only 98 chapters earned the Superior Merit Award, and 24 chapters achieved Merit Award status.

The outgoing board did a great job of organizing site visits to Kettle Foods, Nike, and TriMet this past year. A strong connection was made with the professional AMA chapter in Portland, whose events were well attended by Atkinson students. Thank you to the outgoing board – Melinda Mizuta and Dan Olson, Community Service; Lyndsey Eisenbarth and Joe Weller, Career Development; Colby Curry, VP Finance; and Chris Hanson, Executive VP.

GRADUATING ATKINSON STUDENT OFFERED A UN FELLOWSHIP
Fulbright students from all over the US, who are graduating this May, were invited in early March 2005, to apply for a total of 10 Fellowship positions in the United Nations. Some of the positions are within the US while some others are in Europe and Africa. Atkinson student, AKM Abdullah, who is graduating this month, applied for the position in New York.

On April 19th, Abdullah was informed of the preliminary selection and on April 25th, he got the final offer. Abdullah’s duty will be to evaluate the business processes of some of the global programs conducted by UNICEF and to recommend changes in the service delivery process in order to increase efficiency, as well as conducting a financial analysis. The Fellowship will start on June 12th, 2005.

NUPTIALS AND ENGAGEMENTS
Dominic McIntyre and Melinda Long Dominic McIntyre MBA‘05 has accepted a position with the Defense Intelligence Agency, Office of Counterintelligence. He will begin work in Washington, DC in September, following his marriage to Melinda Long on August 27th, 2005 in The Dalles, Oregon.



 

Joe Weller and Dena Sparks Joe Weller MBA ‘05 has announced his engagement to his girlfriend of four years, Dena Sparks. Joe proposed to Dena on the Coho ferry while returning from a trip to Vancouver Island. His proposal was accepted before the boat hit U.S. soil. The couple is getting married this September at the Oregon Garden.

Freakonomics Cover From Professor Michael Dothan:
Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything, William Morrow, New York, 2005. Steven Levitt is one of the most interesting economists today and a master of the surprising and the unexpected. In this book, he applies his skills to an economic analysis of questions such as: What do teachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their parents? and What do real-estate agents have in common with the Ku Klux Klan? “A great fun,” writes Professor Dothan.

From Professor Bruce Gates:
Let me concur with Michael Dothan’s recommendation of Freakonomics by Steven Levitt. It’s a “ripping good read.” Also for summer reading is Conspiracy of Fools by Kurt Eichenwald.
