MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
A New Beginning

Dean Jim Goodrich As we begin a new fall semester here at the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, we are reminded of the cycles of our school and in our lives. A new term means new students, new faculty, and some new courses. It also means – in our case – some new staff and some new ways of organizing ourselves and our school.

The 65 new students in our incoming Full-Time MBA class are outstanding. As a class, they average the highest incoming GMAT scores (590) in our history – this means that on average, our students rank in the top 30 percent of all test takers in the world. Speaking of the world, international students make up around 30% of the incoming class, coming to us from 10 different countries. Our students represent an outstanding mix of more than 40 different undergraduate colleges and universities. They have worked for a great variety of companies, from Honeywell to Accenture to Starbucks. Many have already started their own business, or are part of family businesses prior to embarking on their MBA. They have passed through a rigorous admissions process which includes expanded personal interviews for every applicant.

Speaking of interviews, our admissions counselors are venturing farther afield this fall than ever before. We are stepping up our contacts and attendance at MBA recruiting fairs and events, and are pushing towards our first early action application deadline of January 9. We have just gained our best recruiting class ever, and already are getting some tremendous interest from prospective 2006 entering students!

Another exciting area where we are starting early this fall is in recruiting for the Professional MBA program. We signed a lease last month for our Willamette University offices in Portland – it will include offices and classrooms in the Brewery Blocks, which as you may know is in the heart of the Pearl district, just west of Powell’s Bookstore. Tina and Carla are hard at work recruiting a class for a projected January start. Please give them a call if you can attend an event or an information session – or of course if you know someone who wants to enter our first class in this outstanding evening MBA program.

Last fall, I used this column to outline some ambitious plans regarding the Atkinson school. As this new school year begins, we are already seeing some of these plans come to fruition. We have hired new staff and faculty, strengthened our AGSM Advisory Board, raised more money, and been successful in gaining increased recognition for the school. Our recent inclusion in the U.S. News Best Graduate Schools top 30 for public finance may well be the highest ranking ever for a Willamette University program.

This year we have an opportunity to thoughtfully revisit and reflect on our goals, and our accomplishments. Indeed this fall our Dean’s Report will focus on the thirty years we have been in existence – and we have some nostalgic “then and now” comments that will give us all food for thought. Yet, as I suggested when we received the affirmation for our AACSB re-accreditation in April, we should properly think of this as more of a beginning than an end. For one thing, the time horizon continues to expand. We have been encouraged by our Trustees and our President to extend our budget and activities plans from five to ten years ahead. Recently at our Administrative Council retreat the Willamette Deans were asked to consider our facilities needs for the next fifteen years.

One of my favorite books is Execution, by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan. The authors argue that we must continue looking ahead if we are to be successful in getting things done. In the efforts to transform winning strategies into genuine results, you can only learn so much from experience. You must keep adding to your ideas and putting yourself in a position to take advantage of new opportunities. I feel this is where we are as a school. Actually, 30 years is not even middle-aged by academic standards. While we have gotten off to a great start, we are just beginning to realize our true potential as a school. Thanks for all that you do to help us continue on our journey. And buckle up, it promises to be quite a ride!

FAMILY ADDITIONS
Lindsey Louise Caldwell JIM CALDWELL MBA’05 and wife Shelby welcomed Lindsey Louise Caldwell on July 21, 2005, who was born at 6:02 p.m. measuring 7 lbs. 13 oz. and 20 ½ inches. “She has a head full of brown hair that appears to be getting lighter each day. She also has a peaceful demeanor which seems to rub off onto her older siblings, Elise (4) and Nathan (2½), who enjoy holding her. Shelby and Lindsey are both recovering well,” writes Jim. The Caldwell’s currently reside in Florida, where Jim is pursuing his Ph.D. at University of Central Florida.

 

GHATTAS KHOURY MBA’03 and his wife Angela had a baby girl named Sumaya Ghattas Khoury on July 20 in Riverside, CA. She was 8 lbs. 6 oz. and 22 inches long.

NUPTIALS
JOHN GOLDWATER ’99, MBA’01 and Erika Batten were married June 11th, in a beautiful, evening, garden wedding at the Gramercy Mansion in Stevenson, Md., as reported in the Baltimore Sun on July 10. Erika is the Manager of Marketing Communications for Network Engines in Boston. John is the Senior Financial Analyst for Cavell USA in Cambridge, Mass. After honeymooning in St. Lucia, the couple now resides at their home in Cambridge.

BRAD KING MM’76 who was recently appointed Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, in April, 2005 married Susan Ehreat Singleton in the French Quarter in New Orleans in July of this year. The couple will split time between homes in Portland, New Orleans and Tega Cay, SC, just south of Charlotte. Hurricane Update: Brad informed us that neither he nor his wife were in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Their home was located near the Lake Pontchartrain levee, which was breached; however, we have not received any further updates regarding their home. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brad, his family and the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

UPDATES
According to a White House Announcement on August 31, 2005, the President intends to nominate SANTANU BARUAH MM’95 to be Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development. Santanu (Sandy) currently serves as Chief of Staff for the Economic Development Administration at the Department of Commerce. Prior to joining the Administration, he was a Senior Management Consultant for Performance Consulting Group in Portland, Oregon. Earlier in his career, Sandy worked for the Secretaries of Interior and Labor. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon and his master’s degree from Willamette University.

The University of Phoenix has hired WADE LARSON MM’96 as associate director of academic affairs for the Spokane campus. Wade was previously the campus college chair of the University of Phoenix’s Idaho Campus in Meridian, as reported in the Spokane Review on July 3rd, 2005.

In June 2005, LAURENE BROUSSEAU MBA’86 received a promotion to Internal Audit Manager at National RV Holdings, Inc.; dba Country Coach, Inc. in Junction City, Ore. Country Coach is a small company manufacturing the “World’s Finest Motor Coaches”.

Shortly after earning his MBA from Willamette University, REESE LORD MBA’04 formed a non-profit called KOREducators with two other partners who have an interest in high school reform. Reese and his two partners plan to start up a charter school in the Portland area. “We recently submitted our charter to the Portland Public Schools, and the district now has 60 days to review our proposal. We have had promising discussions with the district, as well as business, educational, and community leaders, so we have our fingers crossed. Our school, Leadership & Entrepreneurship Public HS (LEP), targets underachieving students in the eastern outskirts of Portland, a diverse area of the city with high poverty and few high quality educational options. We began with the premise that if we can engage kids in their learning, they will be motivated to achieve high levels of success. After researching promising practices with similar student populations across the country, we hope to engage students through our small school structure; project-based, interdisciplinary classes; and real word experiences in the form of internships, mentoring, and service learning,” explains Reese. In addition, Reese also continues his work as the Communications & Public Affairs Manager at the Building Codes Division.

JEFFREY JONES MBA/JD’01 has accepted a position as Chief Operating Officer of Outcomes Inc., which provides data collection and reporting services for health outcomes studies, including HEDIS®, and auditing services related to Medicare and Medicaid. They have a national network of nurse researchers and proprietary technology solutions for work management and statistical analysis. Jeffrey will begin work in St. Petersburg, Florida, in December, and will be expanding the business to Oregon and Washington in the next few years.

MATT HAUGH MBA’03 recently took a new position as a Partner Marketing Manager at Microsoft, where he previously worked as a field marketing manager. In his new role in the U.S. partner group, Matt is responsible for publishing “Marketing Guide for Partners” a hands-on guide that helps partners become better marketers, and especially better marketers with Microsoft. “This is critical for us, as we don’t sell direct in the mid-market, but instead rely on our large and diverse partner channel for virtually all of our revenue. I also own a cool web-based direct marketing tool that our partners can use to get into the direct marketing game without having to do the heavy lifting typically associated with spinning up home grown campaigns from scratch. These two projects are closely related, which gives me the chance to cross-promote. In a way my job is recursive; I’m marketing marketing,” writes Matt. “I’m very excited about the challenge and opportunity before me, and continue to appreciate the entrepreneurial culture at Microsoft that lets me grow our overall business by growing my own.” Matt would also like to give a shout out to Professor Elliot Maltz. “I should have bet him when we debated over the future of the X-Box. He’d owe me a Jamba Juice right about now.”

PABLO UGARTE MBA’00 was recently promoted and relocated from Operations Director in Ecuador to General Manager in México D.F. The multinational firm Pablo works with is Bureau Veritas, and the subcompany he is in charge of within Bureau Veritas is Bivac Mexicana S.A. de C.V. Pablo’s job is to start Bivac Mexicana´s operation in Mexico D.F. from the ground up. Bivac International worldwide is dedicated to inspection and certification contracts with governments, especially in international trade and customs facilitation services.

STEVE DAHL ’90, MM’94, CDR’94has spent the past year preventing the bankruptcy of the Neighborhood Baking Company (i.e. Delphina’s Bakery) and has now taken the position of Economic Development Coordinator for Grant County in Eastern Oregon.

2005 GRADUATE UPDATES
A.K.M. ABDULLAH MBA’05 is working at the Monitoring and Evaluation Division at UNICEF Headquarters in New York. Abdullah is responsible for financial information flow and financial management of country programs around the world.

COURTNEY RANSTROM MBA’05 has taken a position as an internal auditor at the Department of Human Services.

KRISTIN GOODHUE MBA’05 has accepted a position with the City of Salem in the Finance Department as Treasury and Investment Analyst. She manages the city’s investment portfolio which currently exceeds $20 million dollars. Kristin will also be pursuing the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification.

KYLE ABRAHAM MBA/JD’05 recently took the bar exam and is awaiting the results. In the meantime, he continues his work at the Marion County DA’s office for now. “Assuming I pass the bar, I will be going into the Air Force as First Lieutenant JAG Attorney. I will continue working at the DA’s office until I leave for the Air Force in January. The Air Force will tell me where I am to be stationed, for the next two years, sometime in October.”

JAMES ALBAUGH OF BOEING TO SPEAK AT WILLAMETTE MBA BREAKFAST FORUM

Then join the AAA (Atkinson Accounting Association), a new, student operated organization for those interested in a career in accounting and accounting-related fields, such as financial analysis, consulting, or financial planning.

AAA will focus on a wide variety of topics, including “traditional” vs. “emerging” accounting fields, the different accounting certifications available (CPA, CMA, CIA, and CFE), and how to network within the accounting industry. The AAA will accomplish this through speaking events and seminars, which will be held throughout the school year.

Students Ease Culture Clashes
 – Statesman Journal – Tuesday August 23, 2005
On the front page of the Statesman Journal’s local section a large photo of three students stands out among the otherwise typical newspaper page. What makes this photo special is that the students in the photo are second-year MBA student TATENDA CHIRUSA and first-year students DIPA MALAKAR andALINA BOGIU, who are all international students. The article is about two Atkinson students, Tatenda Chirusa and ALIN HUTANU, who were hired to assist international students who recently arrived to begin the MBA program. There are 18 international students in this year’s incoming class from India, Japan, South Korea, Nepal, Kenya, Romania, Denmark, and Canada. The article focused on Tatenda and Alin, who assisted the international students by picking them up from the airport, helping them find housing and getting settled in. Tatenda, who is from Zimbabwe and Alin, who is from Romania, have both been in the U.S. for some time, but can still remember the difficulties of adjusting to a new culture. Read the article…

The Pearl District’s Brewery Blocks 2 complex, at the corner of 11th and Burnside, will house Willamette University’s Portland Center and Professional MBA program. The location offers two classrooms, and includes satellite offices for the President and University Relations, as well as ample meeting space for students and faculty. CAREER SERVICES:
Class of 2005 Interim Career Report
The majority of the graduates from the class of 2005 secured positions as “analysts” in a variety of fields such as finance, marketing, operations, strategy and policy. Other graduates secured positions in recruiting, project management, training, youth ministry, financial planning, sales and marketing management and in the law. Those that entered the public sector secured titles such as Program Evaluator, Internal Auditor, JAG attorney and Counter Intelligence Officer. These graduates went to work for large high tech companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Intel, in healthcare such as Providence Health Systems and Kaiser Permanente in Entertainment such as Feld Entertainment and Nintendo, and in the public sector such as the United Nations and the Oregon Department of Health and Human Services among others. They went to work for large companies such as Weyerhaeuser and Adidas and for small companies such as Saber Consulting and Hire Calling Public Affairs. Ten students sat for the BAR exam in Oregon, Washington and Utah. Five students returned to work with their former employer. Most students stayed on the west coast, a few secured jobs on the east coast and some returned to their home countries. A final report will be available October 1 following the guidelines set out by the MBA Career Services Council.

Summer Internship Report
Many Atkinson students who are starting their second year in the MBA program spent the past summer interning for organizations such as Providence Health System, Saber Consulting, the Office of Senator Vicki L. Walker, T-Mobile, Roadrunner Pest Control and Nike, while others spent their summer studying accounting at the University of Washington. Here are just a few of their stories:

SUSAN HALE and JENNIFER HAMILTON: Attended the Certificate in Accounting Program at the University of Washington. This ten week program covered Intermediate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Tax and Audit. “This accounting program has been grueling but great.”

RYAN KIELMAN: Worked for Providence Health System at their Seattle corporate office. “My internship primarily focused on Business Development, but I also rotated through other departments including Change Management, Accounting, Strategic Finance, and Operations Support.” Some of the projects Ryan work on included system-wide ambulatory care strategy, assessment of business opportunities to diversify operating income and creating new processes to improve change throughout the organization.

MORGAN HILL: Worked with Saber Consulting Inc. in Salem researching a content management system for the corporate website and designing graphics for a mission, vision and values poster to be hung within the company. Morgan also designed and maintained the website to be used by the state of Maryland for updating progress on the implementation of Saber’s voting systems. During the second half of Morgan’s internship he analyzed data from various counties in six states, while simultaneously training IT staff in Maryland via teleconference on the proper methods of updating the website.

BEN REIM: Participated in T-Mobile’s Corporate MBA Internship Program with 11 other interns from top business schools such as Sloan, Harvard, Kellogg and Wharton. Ben was responsible for analyzing all programs that dealt with sourcing T-Mobile call centers and analyzing the overall application process qualitatively. The internship culminated with a presentation to senior management at T-Mobile with an audience that included T-Mobile CEO Robert Dotson, COO Sue Swenson, CFO Brian Kirkpatrick and numerous other VPs and Directors across all functions of the company.

BRETT MCNEIL: Interned at Nike in the E-commerce solutions department. Brett was in charge of conducting research on Nike’s non-strategic retailers and their purchase order methods, looking for areas to increase automation. Brett’s findings, if implemented by Nike, could save the company about 4,000 man hours a year.

Mentorship Program
The mentorship program enables the incoming students to connect with and learn from a successful business person in the community. Mentors, who are alumni and friends of the University, commit to meet with a student at least once per month, September through April and find that it’s a unique opportunity for them as well. This year, nearly 90% of the incoming class registered for the program (up from 60% last year). The program kicks off with a reception on the evening of September 22nd.

Fall Career Events
Thursday, September 29 through Saturday, Oct 1: NSHMBA – National Society for Hispanic MBA Conference in Anaheim, California. Director of Career Services, Beth Ursin, will be attending. “Last year candidates were being interviewed and offered jobs AT THE FAIR,” writes Beth of her previous experience with NSHMBA. Monday, Oct 10 through Wed Oct 12: NHRMA Conference – Northwest Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Professionals Conference. All SHRM members are welcome to attend.

Tuesday, Oct 11 through Sat Oct 16: NBMBAA – National Black MBA Association conference in New Orleans (currently considering relocation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina). “From what I hear, the conference is pretty similar to NSHMBA where students get interviews and offers at the fair. www.nbmbaa.org.”

Thursday, Oct 27 and Friday Oct 28: MBA Consortium Career Fair in Atlanta, GA. – “This year, we are joining this consortium of 11 other similar schools. The fair typically involves interviews with many of the top firms: www.mba-consortium.org. Beth Ursin will be attending and encourages you to as well, especially if you’re willing to move away from the Northwest.

EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Mini-MBA Program
EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT CENTER The Mini-MBA program, offered through Cascade Employers Association, will begin its first module: Developing New Business Ideas on October 7th. Cascade Employers Association and the Executive Development Center have joined together to provide a unique learning and career development opportunity for owners, executives, and managers. The Mini-MBA program provides a practical foundation of current business theory in an intensive series of modules. The integrated curriculum emphasizes an understanding that each function within an organization affects every other function. Through case-studies, problem-solving exercises, and interactive class sessions, this program provides workplace leaders a framework of knowledge for making informed business decisions – every day. The curriculum for the Mini-MBA is composed of modules, which are actually courses taught through Atkinson Graduate School of Management, redesigned and condensed for working professionals. Utility Management Certificate Program
The Utility Education and Training Alliance is sponsoring a Utility Management Certificate designed and delivered by the EDC. The program gives a highly integrated view of gas and electric utilities from their business environments through regulation to financing and internal management. Certificate of Public Management Program
The Certificate of Public Management program provides educational opportunities to state, local and non-profit managers.

On September 16th Cohort V of Atkinson’s Certificate of Public Management program return for their final term. Negotiation and Leadership and Financial Management will be taught by Professors BRYAN JOHNSON andFRED THOMPSON. The 25+ members of this cohort will complete their program on November 18th.

Cohort VI will also arrive on campus on September 16th to begin their first term. Organizational Change and Design and Quantitative Analysis will be their introductory courses. Professors PATRICK CONNOR and BRUCE GATES will teach these courses. Cohort VI will also complete their first term on November 18th.

Cohort VI includes 30 managers from local governments, non-profits, and from the following state departments: State Police, Human Services, Revenue, Oregon Youth Authority, Education, Corrections, Transportation and Public Safety Standards and Training (the police academy) among others.


FACULTY NEWS
 

Steven Maser Professor STEVEN MASER will be facilitating a discussion of ethics for 60-75 state legislators from around the West. The session is part of the annual meeting of the Council of State Governments-West to be held in Portland, September 11-14. His session is entitled, “Principles and Practices: Hands-on Exercises to Build an Ethical Framework for Decision-Making.”

 

Elliot Maltz Professor ELLIOT MALTZ recently had a paper accepted in the Journal of Strategic Marketing, The Effects of Flexible Firm Orientations on Market Information Use: Intended and Unintended Consequences.” The paper is co-authored with Anil Menon and James Wilcox.

Abstract: The current business environment, characterized by rapidly shifting marketplace conditions, is pushing firms to create flexible organizational orientations. At the same time, in order to effectively respond to shifting market conditions, managers throughout the firm must be willing and able to disseminate and respond to market research designed to alert firms to shifts in market conditions. However, little work has focused on how creating a flexible firm orientation affects the way market research is disseminated and used. This paper reports the findings of a study designed to enhance our knowledge in this area. The study suggests that firms attempting to create flexibility can lean toward an innovation orientation (encouraging new ideas) or a speed orientation (encouraging a rapid response). The study also suggests that firms which have an innovative orientation tend to use disseminated market research in a way that is consistent with the findings of the research. On the other hand, firms which have a speed orientation tend to use market research in a way that is less consistent with its findings.

 

Ilan VertinskyFred Thompson ILAN VERTINSKY andFRED THOMPSON organized the biennial workshop of the International Public Management Network (www.inpuma.net), Communicable Crises: Prevention, Management and Resolution in an Era of Globalization, Vancouver, BC, Canada, August 15-17, 2005 (http://www.inpuma.net/news/call4paperswrkshp2005.htm). Ilan made the keynote presentation, Contagion in International Crises: A Case Study of SARS.

 

Fred Truitt Retired professor FRED TRUITT is keeping busy these days. Among his travels around the country, Fred also has time to share with others his talent for watercolor drawing. Fred offers lessons through a non-profit organization near his home on Bainbridge Island, which he calls, Plein-Air Watercolors. “I was always tempted to move classes outside on sunny days; now my classes are scheduled outside on sunny Sundays. New meaning to the old adage, ‘you can take the professor out of the classroom…’ At least lecturing is kept to a minimal.” At the end of August, Fred and his wife Maimu will travel back east to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Fred will teach FINS (Foreign Investment Negotiation Simulation) in the MBA program at Dalhousie University. “But before we leave for Canada we will squeeze in a quick trip to SW Colorado to check on Owen Cruz Christie (photo at 10 weeks). He is reputed to be a happy camper.”

 

STUDENT NEWS

WELCOME CLASS OF 2007!
The students of this year’s incoming class have the highest academic credentials of any class to enter Willamette’s MBA program, with a mean GMAT score of 591 (last year was 585) and a mean GPA of 3.2. The average age of the students is 25 and the average work experience is 18 months. They have held responsible leadership positions in not-for-profit organization. They have completed intensive internship programs and been leaders in their college and work environments. Some of them have already started an organization or business at a young age. Two have started a record business …. one in Salem and one in Romania.

The incoming students come from 10 countries, 12 states, over 40 different colleges and universities and they have traveled, studied or visited more than 40 countries. Many are fluent in at least one second language. The class is 28% female and 28% international, with students from India, China, Japan, South Korea, Nepal, Kenya, Romania, Denmark, and Canada.

The class is amazingly talented and well rounded – class members include founders of organizations and businesses, editors, engineers, scientists, researchers, exceptional athletes, hikers, backpackers, runners, surfers, general outdoor and sports enthusiasts, toastmaster speakers and debaters, founders of organizations, and musicians.

Terri Savage Winners of the 2005-06 George A. Gecowets Scholarship were recently announced by The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. Current Atkinson student TERRI SAVAGE was among the 16 recipients of the prestigious award. Terri’s area of interest is Supply Chain Management and Information Systems. The George A. Gecowets Scholarship Program was initiated to build awareness among high potential students of the opportunities and challenges in a supply chain management career. Since the program began in 1983, 446 scholarships have been awarded.

Dustin Mullins & Lyndsey Eisenbarth Current student LYNDSEY EISENBARTH was recently asked to be married by long-time boyfriend, Dustin Mullins. He proposed the night after her graduation from CLA on May 15th in front of the whole family, including her parents and sister, grandmother and aunt.

“He had planned it with my parents but I was totally surprised. We’ve been dating for 3 1/2 years and plan to get married at the Log House Garden in Keizer next July.” Dustin works as a volunteer firefighter, Marine Corps reservist and is also a student at Chemeketa preparing for the Fire Science program.

Terri Savage Mary Simbala is the recipient of the $1,000 Beta Gamma Sigma matching scholarship program. Mary’s academic preparation, proven abilities and community service made her a prime candidate. Previous professors have commented that, “Mary will have an impact at whatever endeavor she chooses.” Mary writes, “Today more than ever, managers are held personally and publicly accountable for the business decisions they make. Managers must answer for their behavior, yet the pressure on them for positive performance has never been greater, both in the public and private sectors. The only way managers can stay strong and to resist making unfortunate decisions in the short-term that sacrifice the long-term are to hold true to lasting principles. The principles of Beta Gamma Sigma can and should provide a good background and reference for managers today.” The three principles of Beta Gamma Sigma are Honor, Wisdom, and Earnestness.

The recommended readings this month comes from Assistant Professor of Accounting KEN SMITH:

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking Malcolm Gladwell, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink is another good book for managers (also see Tipping Point, 2000). Blink is about how successful managers make snap judgments and instantaneous choices. It asks questions like: “Why are some people brilliant decision-makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work…And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others?”

Blink decision-making is not the painstaking (and time-consuming) analysis of facts through a disciplined study and analysis. Instead, it is about making decisions in an instant using our “adaptive unconscious” – a sort of “giant computer that quickly and quietly processes a lot of the data we need in order to keep functioning as human beings.” The ability to instantly process large amounts of data is what Gladwell calls “thin-slicing” and he uses interesting examples of the Getty Museum and student’s evaluating professors (in 10 minutes).

Finally, Gladwell provides advice and guidance on how to improve one’s use of making snap judgments. He focuses on how to assess our initial biases (that would lead to poor judgments) and how to avoid poor quick judgments. Managers will likely end up with a better appreciation of making decisions quickly as well as through more formal and time-consuming process.
