JENNIFER RONEY STEPS IN AS ASSOCIATE DEAN
Welcome to our summer edition of the Atkinson News! Summer signals a very exciting time for us at Atkinson and particularly for me. Atkinson is hard at work completing construction on the new 2nd floor classroom, the introduction of the Professional MBA to the Portland market, and recruitment of the class of 2007. For me, summer brings an exciting opportunity as the new Associate Dean for Atkinson replacing Debra Ringold who is taking a well deserved sabbatical after which she will return to the faculty. Dean Goodrich asked me to share just a bit about myself by way of introduction.
I may be new to many of you, but I am not entirely new to Atkinson. A year ago January it was my pleasure to join Atkinson as a visiting faculty member. Since then I have been very busy teaching but also learning about Atkinson’s unique history, current culture and shared vision for the future. My history of life and career experience is varied. For example, my career includes management in the Aerospace industry. During my tenure in Aerospace the industry was facing turbulence and transition and the experience provided a wonderful classroom for management during change.
My education includes a B.A. in Economics from U.C.L.A., an MBA from San Diego State, and a Ph.D. in International Management from the University of Utah. During my doctoral work I and my family moved to Krakow to study how indigenous culture influenced receptiveness to new approaches to managing in post-communist Poland. I have continued exploring this topic in other contexts and I am currently exploring complexity theory as a lens to understanding cultural and other change in organizations.
In my academic career I have taught a variety of students including executives, full and part-time MBAs and undergraduates. I have been on the faculty at Southern Methodist University, Pepperdine University and Pacific University in Oregon. In teaching I particularly enjoy finding innovative ways to introduce course material to students by using experiential approaches and commercial film. In addition, I have taken every opportunity to combine my management experience with academia by accepting positions to manage programs and projects and to view academia from a broader perspective.
During this period of opportunity and change for Atkinson I accept my new position with optimism for the future and excitement about the challenges that lie ahead. Please feel free to stop by and introduce yourself. I would love to meet you.
MARI MARGARET (MITZI) PIVA RAAF MBA’95 and JOHN RAAF MBA’95 delivered their first child on May 12th, a son named John Julian Raaf. Though he was delivered six weeks early at just three and a half pounds, he is perfectly healthy and growing quickly.
GINA (ADAMS) REYNOLDS MM’98 was recently promoted to Director of the Strategic Marketing Research & Business Analysis group at King Pharmaceuticals.
SHELLEY HANSON MBA’96 has been appointed the new Director of the Spirit Mountain Community Fund. The fund is the philanthropic arm of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and distributes about $5 million each year to non-profits in an 11 county service area. Shelley is a Grand Ronde tribal member. Her recent work experience includes nearly five years with the Salem-Keizer School District as a Grant Coordinator, and 15 years with the Tribe and Spirit Mountain Development Corporation working in a variety of capacities in management and tribal economic development.
BRIAN PURNELL MBA’83 has recently joined a brand new Real Estate group in Portland, Windermere Realty Partners. “It’s an exciting opportunity and a new concept in Realty, where the partners make up the firm. THREE NEW ADMINISTRATORS JOIN THE ATKINSON COMMUNITY
TINA ALEXANDER PMBA Director
Tina Alexander has accepted the position of Director of the Professional MBA Program at the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. This program will be offered in the AGSM’s Portland classrooms starting in academic year 2005-06.
Tina comes to Willamette University from the Chicago area, where she was a Project Manager for JGSullivan Interactive, Inc. There she managed the development and implementation of cutting edge technology for Fortune 1000 clients including Armstrong, GE, Whirlpool, IBM, Motorola, John Deere, Stanley Furniture, The HON Company and YorkUPG. In addition to managing projects, Tina focused on developing and promoting collaborative working relationships between cross-functional teams, clients and vendors.
In addition to her years of experience in business development and customer relationship management, Tina also has a university background. During her tenure as the Assistant Director of Employer Relations at the University of Notre Dame Career Center, Tina was instrumental in expanding and advancing corporate involvement in the University undergraduate recruiting program. Tina conceived and produced executive-level discussion forums to promote University and Corporate shared agendas and generate mutually beneficial initiatives. She selected and directed the implementation of The Career Center’s first web-based recruiting system and re-engineered the Corporate recruiting process. Her outreach efforts translated into more than 12,000 on-campus interviews.
Tina is a graduate of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Health and Human Services. She is a native of the Chicago area. Tina and her husband Bob have been happily married for 16 years. Tina and Bob share a love of gardening, adventure travel, volunteering and their Bichon Frise, Lucky. She enjoys participating in gourmet cooking courses, attending cultural and regional festivals as well as nature hiking.
Tina is a new member of the Junior League of Portland. In 2005 she served as a member of the fund raising committee of the Between the Lines program, which provides incarcerated mothers an opportunity to connect with their child through reading. Tina participated in the Chicago Catholic Charities Christmas Angel program. She was a member of the South Bend Center for the Homeless and recently completed her appointment as 2004-2005 President of the Northern Illinois University Alumni Chicago Chapter.
Dean Jim Goodrich noted “Tina is just the kind of person we need to build our Portland MBA program, and to get more involved in the business community there. Her many years in customer relations and previous experience at Notre Dame will serve her well in both capacities.”
RUSSELL YOST MBA’05 Director of Marketing
Russell Yost MBA’05 has accepted the position of Director of Marketing for the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. He will coordinate marketing and communications efforts for the Full-Time and Professional MBA programs, as well as the Certificate and other courses offered by Atkinson’s Executive Development Center.
Russell is a native of Salem, and his family comes from the Big Island of Hawaii and Alaska as well as Oregon. He comes to Atkinson after working with Gannett Companies, Inc., parent company of USA Today, at the Statesman Journal newspaper in Salem. Russell participated in the development of custom publishing projects for organizations throughout Oregon and created newspaper advertising campaigns for local clients.
Russell’s experience extends to the public sector where he served as Legislative Assistant to a State Representative and Senator for two regular legislative sessions and five special sessions. He developed speeches, created campaign advertisements and coordinated media contacts. Russell also utilized his public relations skills in working with constituents and organizing campaign events.
Russell received his MBA from Atkinson in 2005 focusing in marketing and international business. During the fall of 2004, Russell attended Atkinson’s abroad program at the University of Southern Denmark. His undergraduate degree is from Gonzaga University. Russell worked with Gonzaga’s Office of Admissions in promoting the university to prospective students.
Russell’s nonprofit experience includes being a mentor for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program of Salem, a volunteer for the Junior Achievement Program in Spokane, and a PaCE partner with the Salem Meals on Wheels program. He has also served as a member of the marketing committee for the Marion-Polk Food Share.
Russell enjoys traveling, theater and watching college basketball.
Jim Goodrich, Dean of the Atkinson Graduate School, stated, “We are now growing to the point where we need a marketing Director to coordinate all our many external messages. Russ will do a great job in pulling together campaigns for our on-campus and off-campus programs.”
CARLA WILTBANK PMBA Senior Program Assistant
Carla Wiltbank has accepted the position of Senior Program Assistant for the Atkinson School’s Professional MBA Program (PMBA) in Portland. She will provide project and program support for the program.
Carla was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Pontificia Universidade Catolica de São Paulo, specializing in Human Resources and Project Management. She worked for many years for SABESP – the São Paulo Water Works, the biggest utility company in Latin America. During that time, she implemented many projects related to customer service, new technology, and training solutions in the environmental field. She was the coordinator of the Sanitation Committee with the Brazilian Association for Non-Destructive Testing, and has written and presented papers in conferences in Brazil and in the U.S.
In 2001, she applied and was granted the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship -sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Fulbright – for graduate studies at the University of Washington. Upon her return to Brazil she joined Korn/Ferry International in the São Paulo office, conducting management team assessments at all levels for a major international mining company.
Her native language is Portuguese, is fluent in English, and has a working knowledge of French and Spanish. She is the proud stepmother of three kids, and enjoys spending time with them and her husband Robert, in their home in Lake Oswego. Carla enjoys hiking, cooking, and interior design. She loves animals and has taken up the “challenge” of training Dori, her new Bernese mountain dog. At the moment, she volunteers with “Friends of Trees” and “Pals of Paws” in the Portland area.
Dean Goodrich noted that Carla has both the people skills and technology skills necessary to running an office at the Portland location: “Carla is just the sort of person we need in starting this office in Portland. I expect her to really contribute to the success of our Professional MBA program.”
WILLAMETTE PROFESSIONAL MBA ANNOUNCES ITS PRESENCE IN PORTLAND
Registration for Willamette University’s Professional MBA in Portland is well under way after an announcement advertisement in the June 10 edition of the Portland Business Journal.
On June 27, an article in the Statesman Journal further outlined the Professional MBA’s quality program tailored to working adults. This was followed by stories on OregonLive.com, OPB radio, KXL Radio and three network news stations. The Professional MBA staff has also attended numerous events in the Portland area to promote the program.
The Lawrence Gallery (903 NW Davis) hosted representatives from Willamette’s PMBA during the Pearl District’s signature “First Thursday” event. The gallery will host Willamette again on August 4th. On July 15, Willamette PMBA staff will also be present at WebVisions 2005, an event showcasing strategies for electronic communication, at the Oregon Convention Center.

EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT CENTER
The Utility Education and Training Alliance (UETA) will present a unique utility management certificate program developed and delivered by the Executive Development Center. This training opportunity is designed specifically for people working in management positions in electric or gas companies, or for managers who are new to the energy industry. This highly interactive and integrative program emphasizes and develops management theories and skills as applied to the utility industry. It provides coursework in managing regulations, stakeholders, resources, opportunities and risks. Participants will receive instruction from industry and management experts and will have opportunities to learn and think strategically. Those who successfully complete this 10-day utility management certification program (October 11-15 and November 15-19 in Portland) will be awarded six semester hours of academic credit. 30 Years…and Still Dancing
It was a night to remember at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland on Thursday, June 9th. To celebrate the official affirmation of accreditation for Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School by the AACSB International and the expansion of our MBA program into Portland, nearly 100 people gathered to honor Atkinson’s 30 years of accomplishments. Partygoers were taken back to the “good ol’ days” with dancing and live music by the Antics, who specialize in tunes from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. A rendition of the Village People’s YMCA was the hit of the evening, with several audience members joining the band onstage donning colorful feathers, construction gear and police caps. A short program included a welcome by Dean Jim Goodrich and his comments on the re-accreditation and the Portland program. The music and dancing continued until late in the evening, when the die-hard partiers reluctantly went home...until the next Atkinson gathering! Here’s to another 30 years plus!
Atkinson 2005 Commencement Ceremony

On Sunday morning, May 15th, 63 graduating students were handed a diploma and hooded at the commencement ceremony, which took place in Mary Stuart Rogers Concert Hall. Atkinson was honored to have Senator Frank Morse as the guest speaker during the commencement program. In addition, the Glen L. Jackson Leadership Awards were presented to Senator Betsy Johnson and her mother, Becky Johnson, for their entrepreneurial and community accomplishments. “Gerry Frank, head of the selection committee, called Senator and Mrs. Johnson models of how business people can positively help Oregon,” as stated in an article posted on MedfordNews.com. Oregon Ethics in Business Award Recipients Honored at Banquet
Recipients of the 2005 Ethics in Business Awards were honored at a banquet at the Governor Hotel on June 15th. The keynote speaker was Richard G. Reiten, Director, retired CEO and Chairman of the Board of NW Natural. The EIB program recognizes up to three businesses for their commitment to ethical behavior, corporate social responsibility, and environmental stewardship; a not-for-profit for ethical behavior, including fund-raising, and impact on the community; and an individual for creating an ethical work environment, ethical leadership, and personal values and actions that support integrity and ethics (for details, see www.ethicsinbusinessoregon.org). Students from the Atkinson School researched the finalists and a selection committee of business leaders and others reviewed the research and chose the award recipients.
Annual Mid-summer Gathering
The Mid-summer Gathering Barbecue, for new MBA students, current students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends was a casual evening of meeting old friends and new, eating food and enjoying the beautiful weather. The Mid-summer Gathering, which took place on Friday, July 15th coincided with the annual Salem Art Fair and Festival, which ran Friday through Sunday. The Festival boasts 180 Northwest artists and artisans, and some of Oregon’s best musical talent.
The 2004-05 Willamette University Administrator of the Year was awarded to Professor of Marketing and former Associate Dean DEBRA RINGOLD. This is a major award presented at the annual Administrative Award Luncheon held in May. By selecting Debra for this award, Willamette recognizes her significant contributions to Atkinson and the entire University.

G. MARC CHOATE, Professor of Economics and Finance
Marc Choate received his undergraduate degree in business from the University of Washington and initially began a career in banking. After two years, he returned to school to pursue graduate studies, earning an MBA and a PhD in business from the University of Washington. Upon graduation he took a position teaching finance at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He joined the Atkinson faculty in 1974 when the school opened, teaching both finance and economics.
During his time at Atkinson, Professor Choate co-authored a finance textbook and wrote assorted articles dealing with inflation and interest rates, dividend policy and hospital finance. For many years he taught finance seminars for the Catholic Health Care Association and engaged in financial consulting for hospitals. For 16 years he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Salem Hospital, serving for two years as chairman. Marc was honored at the ceremony on May 12th as an Emeritus diploma recipient. Marc’s wife and daughter, pictured above, attended the event with Marc.

- LISBETH CLAUS: Award for Meritorious Service. The award will acknowledge a faculty member who has made significant service contributions to AGSM, Willamette University, his/her disciplinary community, and/or to local, state, and national nonprofit and government organizations.
- DEBRA RINGOLD: Award for Meritorious Service to AGSM Students. The award will acknowledge a faculty member who had made significant service contributions to students and student organizations.
- ROB WILTBANK: Award for Outstanding Scholarship. The award will acknowledge a faculty member who has made superior scholarly contributions in a given academic year.
Congratulations are in order for Atkinson Associate Professor of Global Human Resources LISBETH CLAUS who was awarded a 2005-2006 Hewlett grant award for her proposal entitled: Development of Learning Assessment Activities for the Core MBA Curriculum. There were 24 grants awarded among faculty in the College of Liberal Arts, Atkinson Graduate School of Management and the College of Law. “As always, there was an abundance of excellent proposals, in fact, many, many more worthy proposals than we had the resources to fund,” writes President Lee Pelton.
Lisbeth also presented a paper this summer entitled, “Implementing HR shared services in a global company: Lessons learned from Teva Pharmaceuticals,” at the SHRM Annual Conference in San Diego in June 2005. The paper was co-authored with Avi Robinson, Vice President HR International and Israeli Shared Services, Teva.
In addition, Lisbeth also held a two-day executive training session in Zagreb, Croatia in May 2005. The session entitled, “HR: the new business partner,” was attended by senior HR directors from multinational companies operating in Central Europe.
Professor of Organizational Analysis PATRICK CONNOR recently published an essay, “Machines or Gardens ... or Both?” (with Carole S. Napolitano). In Managing Organizational Complexity: Philosophy, Theory, and Application (Kurt A. Richardson, ed.). Greenwich, Connecticut: Information Age Publishing, Inc., 2005: 361-372.
FRED THOMPSON has been appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of Public Affairs Education, the official organ of NASPAA, one of Atkinson’s two accrediting bodies. Fred currently serves on ten such boards, including Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Municipal Finance Journal, and Public Budgeting & Finance. His Validictory Editorial appeared in summer issue (8.2) of the International Public Management Journal. His essay “Fordism, Post-Fordism and the Flexible System of Production” (http://www.willamette.edu/~fthompso/MgmtCon/Fordism_&_Postfordism.html), has been included in a hypertextual archive related to the topics of Fordism, Post-Fordism, and Modern Industrial Organization. Links to this archive, in turn, will be embedded in an experimental electronic book, entitled “From Analogue to Digital Fordism,” to be published in final form at Virginia Tech’s electronic point-of-publication, The Center for Digital Discourse and Culture. This scholarly study will be an open source work, available at no charge on the World Wide Web.
Former faculty member FRED TRUITT and his wife Maimu are happy and grateful grandparents of another grandson. Owen Cruz Christie was born on May 13th, 2005 at 1:20 PM in Durango, Colorado, 8 lbs. 4 oz. and 22” long.

ANNOUNCING A NEW ATKINSON STUDENT PUBLICATION: ATKINSON MANAGEMENT TODAY
The first edition of Atkinson’s new student-produced, online business journal, Atkinson Management Today, was recently distributed to Atkinson students, faculty and staff. View it online at: http://www.willamette.edu/agsm/amt/. The mission of AMT is twofold. First, it will provide the Atkinson community, alumni and other readers with valuable, practical management tools. Second, the journal seeks to raise the profile of Atkinson and its students. As a current student and editor of AMT, JENNIFER HAMILTON writes, “We look forward to hearing your feedback. Also, be thinking this summer and into the fall about how you might want to contribute to AMT – either as an editorial board member and/or writer.” Readers of AMT have agreed so far that this is a great publication. Marleah and Shaun met 2 years ago at a single adult church activity, but ran into each other again in May while he was visiting family in Utah, which is when they decided we wanted to get married. Shaun and Marleah will be returning to Salem in the fall where Marleah will teach at Sprague High School and Shaun will attend law school (and one more MBA course next summer).
2005 ATKINSON STAFF MEMBER / ADMINISTRATOR AWARD
Congratulations to Jim Kephart, Director of Information Services, who was awarded Atkinson Administrator of the Year at the Honors Ceremony on May 12th. The award seeks to acknowledge a staff member or administrator who has made superior contributions to the Atkinson community in a given academic year.

“The book asks why the industrial revolution took place in Europe rather than China; what is shows is that it was an amazing coincidence the industrial revolution took place at all. In that case, the world would have a population of about two billion and the 1 in 3 of us who would be here would probably be illiterate peasants with life expectancies of about 35 and a rich appreciation for gruel. Some of the author’s economic analysis seems questionable and he repeats himself often, but this is still a very good read,” comments Thompson.
