Message from the Dean

Dean Debra RingoldSpring is in the air! We’re now over a month into the spring semester and our faculty, students and staff are as busy as ever. This is the first ATKINSONews of 2008, and it is full of exciting events and announcements.

A few items to note:

*Congratulations to our Business Women’s Forum – now an official chapter of the National Association for Women MBAs (NAWMBA).

*Our International Graduate Student Association hosted an extraordinary international dinner in February, showcasing the culinary and artistic talents of their home countries.

*Our Early Career MBA Preview Day welcomed nearly 40 prospective students to our campus in February. Another “Preview Evening” is planned on April 11 for those looking for an opportunity to experience the Willamette MBA first hand.

*Our talented MBA filmmakers have the opportunity to share their Willamette MBA stories with us at our March First Thursday event in Portland. Individual students and teams created a number of short videos about their experience at Willamette.

*The MBA for Professionals program is now accepting applications for a limited number of seats this May and full cohorts in Salem and Portland next September. Contact Tina Alexander for more information.

AdrianAdrianAdrian Melvin was born on February 2nd at 9:04 AM to parents Jorge Ordonez MBA’05 and Jessica Ordonez MBA’05, weighing 7.4 pounds. "Baby and mom are healthy," Jorge writes. Jorge and Jessica reside in Peru.

 

MadeleineElliott Dale MBA’06 and Jennifer Dale MBA’06 are proud to announce that Madeleine Jane Dale arrived on February 16, 2008 at 9:52 pm, weighing 9 pounds, 3 ounces. "Jennifer is healthy and recovering," writes Elliott.

 

Updates

Geoff Guilfoy MBA’83, principal of Aldrich, Kilbride & Tatone and adjunct professor at Atkinson, conducted a seminar at University of San Diego's Annual Institute for Nonprofit Governance Conference. Geoff's seminar touched on the following discussions: Nonprofits, just like businesses, have distinct lifecycles and stages of development; How you govern today is not necessarily how you should govern tomorrow; What factors should boards consider when deciding on a governance structure?; What governance model is right for your nonprofit today?

In other news, Geoff's company was also honored as one of Oregon's Most Admired Companies by the Portland Business Journal. Oregon businesses and chief executives have ranked AKT among the state's top 10 Most Admired Companies in the professional services sector. AKT was named fifth most admired in the professional services category and was the highest-ranked accounting firm on the list.
The annual award is among the Portland Business Journal's most prestigious and recognized honor because companies are selected by their peers. The general business community and more than 2,500 CEOs submitted surveys to vote on the top companies in several industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture and professional services. They rated companies on their innovation, service quality, community involvement and management.
The professional services category is comprised of accounting and law firms, and more than 80 companies in the category received votes. Only three accounting firms were ranked in the top 10, with AKT achieving the top spot among accounting firms. Jennifer Dale MBA’06, Senior, Public Sector Division for AKT, was also in attendance at the awards ceremony.

Brian Bartholomew MM’84, partner of In Your Home, a company founded to provide a range of support services that help seniors remain independent, says the business continues to grow and they are close to selling their first franchise. MusteikyteJurate Musteikyte MM’95, Senior Advisor in the Information Analysis Department of Parliament for the Republic of Lithuania, served as an election observer in the country of Georgia in early January. Pictured in the middle.

 

Leah Daniels MBA’07 recently left the field of Human Resources and her position with FEI Company to join the Business Development/Marketing Department at Stoel Rives LLP as its Web Content Manager. Leah began her position at Stoel on Feb 4th and continues to reside in Portland.

Nick Jwayad MBA’01, was recently appointed as the chief information officer for Portland Public Schools. Nick has more than 10 years experience in education and government, spending the last seven years in K-12 information technology management in Oregon. Nick has been with PPS since 2004, serving as an information technology director in the development and support of district information systems and applications. He has served as the interim director following the departure of the former CTO. Prior to joining PPS, Nick was information technology operations manager for Willamette Education Service District in Salem. At WESD, he drove the development and implementation of a student, fiscal and special education solution for several school districts across Oregon. Nick was involved in Phases I and II of the State of Oregon's eGovernment initiative and held positions with the City of Portland, Washington County and the Oregon Secretary of State's office. Nick resides with his family in Lake Oswego.

 

Michael Rindfleisch MM’96 was recently selected to attend the George C. Marshall European Center’s College of International and Security Studies. The program, located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, is one of the leading Trans-Atlantic security and defense centers of excellence and provides an international perspective to create a more stable security environment by advancing democratic defense institutions and relationships through enduring partnerships. Participants in the program are nominated from mid- and upper-level management positions within counter-terrorism organizations throughout Europe, Eurasia and North America.
Michael is currently the Chief of the Combating Terrorism Analysis team for the US European Command’s operational Air Component. Michael resides in Europe and works closely with security agencies in the aftermath of significant attacks in Madrid 2004 and London in 2005 and the foiled attempt in Germany in 2007. "The key element to preventing future terrorist events remains the strong relationship between international security agencies and defense organizations utilizing the fundamental values of a democratic society," writes Michael.

BernauJim Bernau MBA'82 , CEO and Chairperson of the Board of Willamette Valley Vineyards was the featured speaker for the February 21st Portland Business Journal's Power Breakfast.
In 1983, Jim cleared the land and planted the vineyard, becoming one of the early winegrowers in what has become a major Oregon agricultural industry. Jim's wines have received some of the highest ratings and recognition among Oregon wines including the "Top 100 in the World" designation from Wine Spectator Magazine. Willamette Valley Vineyards is unique in a couple of ways, first that Jim funded its start-up conducting the nation's first successful, self-underwritten, public common stock offering for a winery - creating a consumer-owned business. Today, the winery has over 4,500 wine enthusiast shareholders and is traded on the NASDAQ. Secondly, all the company’s vineyards are certified sustainable.
Raised on a small farm near Roseburg, Jim attended Oxford University, the University of Oregon and the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. He also has served in a number of leadership roles including President of the Oregon Winegrowers Association where his work has earned him the Outstanding Service and Founders Awards.

Jon Lazarus MM’98 has accepted a promotion to Research Coordinator within the Oregon Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Research Division after serving 5 years in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) unit. Jon's stay at ITS centered around the agency's web site, www.tripcheck.com, and road and weather phone system (dial 511). Jon was responsible for bringing statewide 511 dialing to Oregon and several key improvements to the web site. Jon's new job will be organizing research projects for ODOT, with emphasis on construction and materials topics. "Professor Gates’ and Hand's stats classes really do come in handy," Jon writes. Jon has other news for celebration, as his baby girl is turning 1 year old on February 14th. Along with Jon's new job and responsibilities, he is considering trying for his Fundamentals Exam (FE) to become an Oregon state certified Engineer. Passing the FE is the first step in the process to becoming a Professional Engineer. Jon and his family reside in Salem.

Willamette University President M. Lee Pelton Describes Willamette’s Role in the Salem Community

The Willamette University MBA recently hosted over 100 of Salem’s Young Professionals at a special presentation and discussion with President M. Lee Pelton. In his presentation, President Pelton described the role Willamette University plays in the Salem community, and the partnerships Willamette has formed over the years to help improve the quality of life in the Salem area. One such initiative is the long-term plan to build a new Performing Arts Center on the west side of Willamette’s campus.

President Pelton emphasized the importance of making Salem a welcoming place for young professionals, especially as Willamette graduates decide where to live after graduation. Pelton’s remarks echoed a recent guest article he submitted to the Statesman Journal newspaper. Dean Debra Ringold Interviewed by the Statesman Journal – Shares Her Ideas of Success and Leadership

Statesman Journal Opinion Editor Dick Hughes recently visited the Atkinson Graduate School for a one-on-one interview with newly appointed Dean Debra Ringold. During their conversation, Ringold shared her vision for the Atkinson School, its students and its programs. In addition, Ringold described what the role of Dean means to her:

"Deans are formally the chief executive of a school or a college. In this case, it's the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. And in an academic setting, that person is also the chief academic officer. So I'm responsible for day-to-day operations -- not directly, but the buck stops with me. I'm responsible for the financial well-being of the institution. And I'm responsible for quality in our faculty, activities and all of the student experiences that we offer. So I have the same kinds of responsibilities that any CEO would have of an operating unit, but I also have the responsibility to ensure highest academic standards are being met by everyone in the enterprise."

Atkinson Alumnus Holds National Office in Kazakhstan

Galym Pirmatov MBA’01 was appointed Vice Minister of Economy and Budget Planning for the Republic of Kazakhstan in December 2007. He will oversee international economic relations and policy for the management of State assets.

Prior to his appointment, Pirmatov worked as the Managing Director and Head of Investment Banking at Halyk Savings Bank of Kazakhstan, one of the country’s largest banks. He has also worked as a Chief Financial Officer and a Chief Commercial Officer for a number of institutions in Kazakhstan, Ukraine and the United States.

“We’re very proud of Galym and his great accomplishments in his home country of Kazakhstan,” said Michael Dothan, Guy F. Atkinson Professor of Economics and Finance. “He is living proof of Atkinson’s global reach and the applicability of the skills learned here in any organization around the world.”

"A Slice of Willamette" Cookbook on Sale

Slice

"A Slice of Willamette" is the name of a new fund raising cookbook from the classified employees of Willamette University in Salem. Contributions came from professors, graduates and employees across campus.

The cookbook includes photographs and historical information dating to 1842.Photos range from the 1941 football team that assisted in the rescue efforts at Pearl Harbor to the 2005 renovation of Waller Hall. Proceeds benefit a fund the staff developed to help students pay non-tuition expenses, including books, room and board. Two scholarships were awarded last spring.

The cookbook contains recipes for all types of food, from appetizers to desserts, and caters to special diets such as Vegan (Chai Cookies). The cookbook is on sale for $17 at The Willamette Store in the University Center, 900 State St., Salem. Update from Director of Career Services: Beth Ursin

Bonneville Power Administration Trek: Several of our alumni at Bonneville Power Administration organized a fantastic tour of the Lloyd Center facility on January 25th and provided one-on-one meetings with executives and alumni from a variety of business units. Students who attended learned interesting facts and gained an understanding of the culture. Participating alumni included Jon Dull MBA'02, Scott Coe MBA'89, Andrew Meyers MBA'01, Ryan Josephson MBA'01, and David Barringr MM'82.


Mock Recruiting Event: Forty-seven students, staff, alumni and mentors participated in this year’s mock recruiting event on January 24. First year students had an opportunity to practice networking and using their elevator pitch at a mock event with the goal of being hired at Ringold and Associates. At the end of the evening, students added up their points based on feedback from the mock recruiters and five students were ‘hired’.


Company Information Sessions: In January, two organizations held company information sessions over the lunch hour: George Beard, faculty at PSU who manages six MBA internships in the public sector, including the Oregon Performance Internship Program, and the Oregon Department of Administrative Services who manage the Oregon Promise Program. Both organizations hire multiple AGSM students each year for excellent internships with state and local governments.


2008 Career Fair: On February 1st, over 200 MBA students from seven AACSB accredited MBA programs in the Northwest joined 27 corporations at this year’s NW MBA Career Day. Teaching Business Successfully Returns this May

Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management presents an innovative one and a half day program for executives who aspire to perform as effectively in the classroom as they do in business. If you’ve ever thought about teaching, this program will provide you with the tools you need to be an effective teacher, trainer or consultant.

The program will be taught by James G. Clawson, Professor of Business Administration and head of the Leadership and Organizational Behavior Area at the University of Virginia’s Darden School. Professor Clawson teaches and leads several Executive Education programs. His research addresses issues of leadership, career management, management development, and mentoring. He has authored four books, numerous articles, and written or supervised the writing of more than 100 cases on a variety of topics.

Certificate in Transportation and Community Transit Management Offered in Two Northwest Locations This Spring

Willamette University’s Executive Development Center is pleased to present the Certificate in Transportation and Community Transit Management Certificate in two locations this spring:

Faculty News

 

Søren Loentoft Hansen, Michael U. Dothan, and Fred Thompson co-published an article entitled "Appraising Commitments and Guarantees with Option Prices," in Public Budgeting & Finance. Volume 27, Issue 4 (winter 2007), pages. 99–112. The article grew out of an independent research project carried out by Søren when he was a visiting student at AGSM in the spring of 2005.

Additionally, Fred Thompson published the article '"Mission-Driven, Results-Oriented Budgeting: Fiscal Administration and the New Public Management" in Volume 14, Issue 3 (Sep 1994), Page 90-105, which is featured as the journal's most frequently cited article. http://www.blackwellsynergy.com/action/showMostCitedArticles?journalCode=pbaf

Elliot Maltz was honored as this year's recipient of the Jerry E. Hudson Award for Excellence in Teaching and Faculty Leadership. This award celebrates distinguished teaching and leadership by a Willamette University faculty member. The award was presented to Elliot at the Annual Faculty Awards Ceremony on January 31, 2008.

Additionally, Elliot's co-authored paper titled “How Procurement Managers View Low Cost Countries and Geographies: A Perceptual Mapping Approach” has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management (IJPDLM). It provides guidance on how developing markets are viewed as places that companies might source their manufacturing operations.

BethDirector of Career Services Beth Ursin was elected as President-Elect of the Salem SHRM chapter for 2008. SHRM is the world's largest association devoted to human resource management. Representing more than 165,000 individual members, the Society serves the needs of HR professionals by providing the most essential and comprehensive set of resources available. Long-time Staff Leaving Atkinson

LindaLinda Pyle will be leaving her position as Director of Events at Atkinson in mid-March. Linda will seek career opportunities that utilize her Master's degree and focus on her interests in management in science, technology and sustainability industries. We wish Linda the best of luck as she pursues these interests and thank her for all of her efforts on behalf of the Atkinson School.

JeanneJeanne Hobson has resigned from her position as Administrative Assistant. In the words of Jeanne, "I have learned much in my four plus years at Atkinson and developed many friendships. However, in order to move forward with my career I must pursue new challenges and seek out other opportunities. I will miss working in such a dynamic and diverse organization with some truly remarkable people." We thank Jeanne for all her support and her unique ability to bring a smile to anyone's face. We wish her the best in her future endeavors.

Business Women's Forum Becomes National Association of Women MBAs

BannerThe Atkinson Chapter of Business Women's Forum recently became an affiliated student chapter of the National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA). As such the name has changed to the National Association of Women MBAs - AGSM Chapter.
NAWMBA is a national organization comprised of student and professional chapters dedicated to "empowering women MBAs and graduate women in business in order to propel more women into leadership positions in corporate America and to enhance the diversity of the nation's workforce." This organization is open to men and women and provides a national network of resources.

Student Updates

 

Current JD/MBA student Peter Johnson recently passed the PHR (Professional in Human Resource) certification exam. The PHR exam assess generalist knowledge of the HR field, including strategic management, workforce planning and employment, HR development, total rewards, employee and labor relations, and risk management.

NatalieProfessional MBA student Eric Ross and his wife Lee Ann welcomed Natalie Anne Ross to the world on December 20, 2007. "Everyone is doing great," writes Eric.

 

McKennaMcKenna Camille Thomas was born to Professional MBA student Tiffany McCracken and her husband Aaron on January 11, 2008 at 7:39 am at Willamette Falls Hospital in Oregon City. "She weighed 7 lbs. 1/2 oz. and was 19 inches long," writes Tiffany. "Mom made it to work and class the first week but started labor the very next morning. Dad, Aaron, was so excited and relieved that surgery went well for mom and baby. Gramma (Tiffany's mom) made it all the way from Tennessee that night at 9 pm."
"Dad picked the name McKenna and mom chose her middle name to honor her best friend. Those who know we have been in a major remodel state since school started will be happy that we are countertops away from a full kitchen. Dad worked into the wee hours of the morning each night after McKenna was born to get it ready. He kept saying she's coming here too early (she was 11 days early)...I just need two more weeks! After meeting her, he promptly changed his mind. Everything is coming together just fine and we are all so happy, excited and completely filled with love."

LemonProfessional MBA student Susan Hanf was a featured author at The Willamette Store Author's Fair on February 1st, a Founder's Day event celebrating the University’s 166th birthday.
