Message from the Dean


Dean Debra RingoldDear Willamette MBA Community,

It is a wonderful time to earn an MBA from Willamette and I wanted to update you on our progress and initiatives. We are investing in the future of our students right along with them, even in challenging economic times.
 
As always, our top priority is the education and success of our students.  Willamette University maintains a strong financial position and continues to make investments in our faculty, our programs, our students and our future.  Specifically:

  • The Willamette MBA’s unique multisector curriculum in business, government and not-for-profit management offers more career choices to our graduates entering the workforce.
  • The Willamette MBA continues to increase the size of our full-time MBA faculty. A low student-to-faculty ratio represents the dynamic, hands-on learning experience to which we are known.
  • The Willamette MBA continues to expand curricular options. Watch for announcements about new electives and new areas of interest in Sustainability and Global Management in the coming months.
  • The Willamette MBA continues to invest in career, networking and leadership opportunities for our students and alumni. We have expanded the internship program, career services and student professional organizations.  Look for specific announcements in this newsletter where you can join us at professional development events.

These investments ensure the highest quality experience for our students, our faculty and our alumni. They represent our commitment to the success of our students and graduates, offering a high return for your efforts and dollars.

Updates

Kannin Law WebsiteJohn Kannin JD/MBA'97 has developed a new website at Kannin Law Firm P.S. that is focusing on branding himself - John the lawyer - and delivering personalized legal services to his customers. "It is interesting because we trying to differentiate our firm from the herd of cookie-cutter law firm websites," writes John. "We are doing this by implementing video and flash menus that are branding me as opposed to simply showing legal services in general . You really just gotta take a look at it to fully appreciate it." www.kanninlaw.com.

Jordan Bishko JD/MBA'99 recently started working for Green Gear Cycling / Bike Friday, a Eugene, OR based manufacturer of folding bicycles. They fabricate high performance travel bicycles as well as utilitarian folders for urban environments. Bike Friday is a lean manufacturer utilizing Toyota’s Production System and Jordan is the Value Stream Manager for Service & Customer Service. "My work is quite dynamic," writes Jordan, "with the ability to manage a variety of projects and take on as much responsibility as I can handle. While the recent economic climate has stunted sales a bit, the business continues to grow and it is exciting to be in an integral role within the company. On the personal front, my wife Miriam Gershow just got her first novel published, “The Local News” by an imprint of Random House. The novel just received a very positive review in the New York Times."

Grace Crunican MBA'79 was quoted in the Seattle Times on February 20, 2009. "Seattle's top transportation official Friday used her strongest language yet to describe missteps in the city's response to three December snowstorms," states the article. The article recounts Grace's speach to the Seattle City Council about the mayor's "after-action report," released last week, which details what the city could have done differently.

Willamette Eco Summit a Success!


Last fall, seven MBA for Professionals were awarded a Sustainability Mini Grant from the Willamette Sustainability Council.  They put those grant dollars to work and hosted two successful workshops on "Learning to live and work sustainably."  The first workshop was held February 7th and everyone took away concrete ideas on how to make eco-friendly choices in their daily lives.  Each person then implemented them in a month-long Sustainability Challenge.  The second workshop was last Saturday, March 7,  and was dedicated to green practices in the workplace.  Both workshops attracted a wide variety of people from the Willamette Community and the Portland business community.  The Willamette Eco Summit group is proud of their accomplishments and hope that their efforts have inspired awareness and change towards a more sustainable future.

The Willamette MBA program has partnered with the Portland Business Journal in sponsoring two large networking events this spring.  The “40 Under 40” awards reception honors outstanding emerging business leaders in our community, especially those exemplifying volunteerism and civic involvement.

Willamette Women at the Women in Business Event

The Willamette University Alumni Career Network and the Willamette University MBA are pleased to present a special reception in Portland prior to the Women in Business Expo.

Network, celebrate and learn about the unique opportunities available for women affiliated with Willamette University.  The Willamette University MBA will make a special announcement regarding the launch of the Oregon Women MBAs, a professional chapter of the National Association of Women MBAs.

Entertainment provided by Up Top, Willamette’s all female choral group.  A ticket discount to the Portland Business Journal’s Women in Business Expo is available for all reception attendees ($40 registration fee, 30% off the public ticket price).

Update from Career Services: Beth Ursin & Shelby Gould

 

Shelby GouldBeth UrsinOn-Campus Programming – February included company information sessions by Regence, Tektronix and Salem Hospital. Epic Aviation, Air BP interviewed on campus as did Regence.  Tektronix invited candidates to their campus for interviews and Salem Hospitals interviews are yet to come.  The goal during the spring is to bring companies on campus that have posted positions. The International students association put on a huge dinner in February with over 100 attendees. We each had the opportunity to sample home-made treats from a variety of countries and participate in an excellent program. The semester ended with a Leadership seminar by Professor Larry Ettner, PhD for the MBA for Professional students.


Off-Campus Programming – The Student Accounting Association organized a full-day of activities in Portland including a site visit to KPMG, a panel of employers from Ernst & Young, Perkins  & Company and Lindquist LLP, followed by a small group coaching session on preparing for fall recruiting and building your accounting resume with alumni, Susan Hale ’06 and Jennifer Dale ’06. The Human Resources students were invited to Portland this month for a similar round-table session with Regional Director of SHRM, Dianna Gould and former NHRMA President, Monique Little, both mentors for the Willamette MBA program.

This Certificate Program takes a unique approach to presenting the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental well-being. This is done in a way that will integrate all areas of sustainability by first focusing on the dynamics of complex systems, followed by a practical look at social systems and how the expansion of social well-being ties directly to economic and environmental well-being.

LEARNING AND LEADING FOR SUSTAINABILITY – MAY 6-8, 2009

Sustainability is not a problem to be solved. It is a future to be created. Leadership is not about position or formal authority but the capacity of human communities to shape futures that people truly desire. What does it take to nurture and unleash such leadership? Led by Peter Senge of MIT, and joined by colleagues working in the sustainability field, this workshop will be a synthesis of core organizational learning disciplines - systems thinking, mental models and collaborative inquiry, personal mastery and building shared vision - and the practical know-how developed through the Society on Organizational Learning and the book The Necessary Revolution.

CERTIFICATE IN SOCIAL ACTION RESEARCH – MAY 11-15, 2009

This residential, retreat format certificate program is for those who want to not only learn more about how performance occurs inside organizational social systems.  It is for those who also want to learn how to apply social action research methods to uncover and better understand performance, social and financial well-being inside their own or client organizations.  The 4 day workshop is offered at the Rex Ranch retreat and conference center and will require some follow up work for participants to complete certification.
