Special Message – Supporting the Future of the Willamette MBA
 

Dear Willamette MBA Community,

My journey with Atkinson started nearly three years ago during the American housing market crash and ensuing economic downturn.

I was a recent college graduate, underemployed, knowing that my potential was going unmet. I knew that I had to take control of my situation and saw Willamette and Atkinson as the key to the future I envisioned for myself.

I was drawn to Atkinson because of its focus on practical and experiential learning through their signature PACE program and various course offerings. Not to mention their numerous awards and recognitions, such as the Princeton Review's Best Graduate Business Programs. I saw opportunity in the program's ability to mix real-world experience and exposure into a graduate level curriculum.

Now, a little over a year after I started at Atkinson, I've experienced daily opportunities to grow as a person, a student, a professional, a teammate and a leader. All of which will greatly serve me in my future endeavors. Through my time in Atkinson's PACE program and classes, I've learned patience, how to place trust in others, the ability to lead cross-cultural teams and developed the confidence in myself to be successful in the profession I choose. Most importantly, I've created a future filled with exciting opportunities.

The community at Atkinson has been an asset for me as well. I am surrounded by students with diverse backgrounds—both professionally and geographically, who bring new perspectives and expertise to my education. The staff and faculty at Atkinson have always provided clear passion and dedication in their teaching and mentorship, providing constant support and guidance.

As a recipient of Atkinson merit-based scholarships, I absolutely realize the importance of support from our alumni. Your contributions to the Atkinson Graduate School of Management allows the school to continue the PACE program, attract nationally renowned professors, support a bevy of student organizations and offer scholarships to students like me. As a current student leader and a future alumnus of this school, I sincerely ask you to make an online contribution to show your support for all that Atkinson has to offer and to provide these same opportunities for others. I certainly plan to join you in contributing after I graduate.

Family Additions
 
Josh Caldwell MBA'06 and his wife Brooke, welcomed the long-awaited arrival of their son, Simon Joshua Caldwell, with much anticipation, on March 23, 2012. Simon weighed in with a fighting weight of 7 pounds and 8 ounces, 19 inches in length, and a slight, but well-intentioned right hook. Simon rounds out the Caldwell Clan with four adoring older sisters, and a reluctantly optimistic older brother.

Katherine Durant MBA'90 of Atlas Investments, was honored as one of this year's Orchid Award winners, a Portland Business Journal event that recognizes women and their contributions to the business community. The women will be celebrated at a luncheon on April 25th. Read the article here.
 
Jane Jackson '93, MBA'95 is off for another overseas 18-month work assignment with Intel Corporation. Her husband, Paul Jackson '94 and kids will join her in Malaysia for another exciting expat adventure. Jane will be doing Small Project General Construction Manager and Controls Compliance. She is thrilled with this new opportunity
 
Jorge Ordonez MBA'05 recently returned from Mexico, where he made a presentation on Renewable Energy Auctions in the "Mexico National Forum on Renewable Energy Regulation," organized by the Mexican Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The invitation was made through the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). Jorge works as a Senior Financial Economist for the Public Utility Commission of Oregon and has made similar presentations in Costa Rica and Guatemala in the past year.
 
Mark de Rohan Barondes MBA'11 was recently installed as the Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Cryptic Masons of Oregon. The Cryptic Masons is one of the Masonic bodies in the York Rite. The title of Grand Master is equivalent to Executive Director with responsibility for leading the statewide organization. "I have instituted a new mission, vision, and measurable goals as we work towards achieving a sustainable organization that will last another 130 years," writes Mark.

Atkinson Alumni Reunite in Japan
Atkinson alumni in Japan gathered on March 14th at T.Y. Harbor Micro Brewery in Tokyo. They celebrated their reunion with Oregon Pinot Noir.

Alumni who attended were Hideyuki Sato MBA'04, Kensuke Ono MBA'04, Note Vongslai MBA'04, Hide Azuma MBA'05, Gyeong-suk Pyeon'05 (joined from Skype), Ichiro Nakajima MBA'06, Etsuko Nakajima (Ichiro's wife), and Kin Ki (Professor, TIU). A year since the earthquake disaster in Japan on March 11th, the alumni offer words of thanks: "Dear all, thank you for praying for Japan and encouraging us."
 

Professor Lisbeth Claus Featured on CNBC Africa, Huffington Post

When global events unfold, who is responsible for the health, safety and security of these globally mobile employees abroad? Lisbeth Claus, Professor of Global Human Resources, has spent the last three years answering this important question.

Through her work with International SOS, an agency assisting organizations with duty of care issues, she has developed strategies for organizations looking for answers to global human resource challenges.

Professor Claus recently traveled to South Africa and was featured on the program "Beyond Markets" on CNBC (Africa). Her study was also covered by the online site the Huffington Post. Read more about the benchmarking study and watch Professor Claus' interview online.

Bobbi Brown Visits Willamette and Discovers Bearcat Connection
In early March, Bobbi Brown, CEO and Founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, paid a visit to Willamette University's campus and delivered a rousing presentation on success and entrepreneurship. During her visit, Bobbi discovered a connection between her product line and Willamette University.

Several Willamette alumni, pictured below (l-r) with Bobbi, including Mike Martinez '00, MBA'11, Charles Beckwith '02, MBA'04 and Aaron Reber MBA'10, have collaborated with Bobbi Brown and other well-known cosmetic companies, on a natural ingredient for their products. Natural Plant Products' corporate parent was founded in 1984 as a collaboration of 7 grass seed farms committed to developing a new crop called meadowfoam. Since that time, the cooperative has expanded to over 50 farms stretching the length of Oregon's Willamette Valley and Meadowfoam Seed Oil has gained broad acceptance as an emollient in the global personal care industry.

Update from the Career Management Team: Beth Ursin & Shelby Gould
March and April are when students are in high gear interviewing, networking and applying for internships and just-in-time jobs. We appreciate you all letting us know as you hear about openings in your organization by emailing Beth Ursin at eursin@willamette.edu.  


Career Close-up: Personalized Career Fair

At this event, each student was able to have a one-on-one meeting with two employer representatives and meet every employer in small group formats. Networking between sessions enabled students and employers to casually get to know each other. Students always get jobs and internships from this fair and this year was no different. Several students have reported interviews following the event. Last year, Waggener Edstrom blogged about what a great event it was. This year's attendees included several alumni including Janna Honegger MBA'10 with Adidas, Angela Kienholz MBA'11 of Clear Memorial, Praveen Chalise MBA'02 of Market Strategies International, and Matt Benjamin '02, MBA'05 of Northwestern Mutual. Other employers represented the public sector such as Business Oregon and Oregon Health Authority, the private sector such as Evergreen Aviation and Waggener Edstrom and the not-for-profit sector such as Habitat for Humanity and the American College of Sports Medicine Northwest Chapter.

Power Lunch Speaker: Bobbi Brown
Bobbi Brown, a parent of a Willamette student came on campus and shared her story with students.  She had a vision, worked hard to get her foot-in-the-door in an industry where she had no previous contacts and then changed the face of women across the country and became a household name.

Employers on Campus: Insitu
The company who manufactures drones in the Columbia Gorge was represented on campus by alum, Cheryl Berger MBA'09 for an information session for students.

Site visits to employers: Deloitte and Geffen Mescher
Accounting association students carpooled to Portland to visit and learn about careers in public accounting. Alums hosting at Deloitte included Purnima Renjen MBA'00 and Kelly Intile MBA'10.

Panelists on Campus
Hosted by the International Students Association and the student chapter of the American Marketing Association, included alumni: Harvey Gail MBA'88 of Van Natta Public Relations, Geoff Guilfoy MBA'83 of AKT, LLC, Sumit Sabharwal MBA'10 of Radha Consulting and Ahmed Chaikhoun MBA'11 of Holiday Retirement. Additional panelists came from Rubicon International and SEDCOR.

Portland Alumni Gathering
Once per semester, Shelby and Beth host a small student-alumni gathering in Portland where students, alumni and volunteers can have a great conversation over pizza and beer This one was hosted at Bridgeport Brewery. Alumni attendees included: Angela Mahoney '94, MBA'00 of PECI, Matt Benjamin '02, MBA'05 of Northwestern Mutual, Andrew Beldin MBA'11 of Revenue Capital Management, TJ Sandvig MBA'11 of REMAX Advantage Plus, Katie Bertel MBA'11 of State Farm Insurance,  Mark Ursin MBA'85 of Providence Health System, and Jason Ritchie MBA'11 of Lease Dimensions.  Our next gatherings will be in Portland at the Bridgeport Brewery on Tuesday, July 17th and in Seattle (Location TBD) on Wednesday, June 20th from 5-7pm.

Willamette University and the Center for Partnership Studies Present "Caring Economy Leadership Program"

Based on Dr. Riane Eisler's groundbreaking book, The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics, leaders in business and community organizations acquire a new vocabulary and framework to advocate for economic practices, policies, and measurements that give visibility and adequate value to the most essential human work: the work of caring for people.

The robust online program includes 6 interactive classes with a small cohort group, features a special 90-minute conversation with Dr. Riane Eisler, and culminates in facilitating a practicum in an accessible business or community setting.

Willamette students/alumni who would like to take advantage of this offer can choose to join either:

Cohort L: Real Wealth track
Meets seven times: Thursday mornings at 10:00 am PT
Begins May 3.

Cohort M: Women's Empowerment track
Meets seven times: Friday mornings at 10:00 am PT

1. Read more about the program, review the schedule of classes, and click on the red "Apply Now" button at the top of the page.  Or, click here to go straight to the application form. 

2. On the application form, when asked "Where did you hear about this program," indicate that you heard through Willamette.  When you are accepted to the program, you'll receive a welcome letter.  Tuition in the program is $345 and we are opening spaces for the first five Willamette students accepted in this program for classes starting in May, 2012 (Cohorts L and M). 

These spaces are available only to the first 5 Willamette students who apply to these Cohorts, and Applications for May-start programs are due by April 20th, so act fast to participate in this program!

Congratulations to this year's Hewlett grant award winners:

Henry Bi, Elliot Maltz: Discovering the High-performing Sustainable Organizations

Polly S. Rizova: Putting Social Networks to Work for Managing Organizational Change in Health Care Settings

The Hewlett grant program is administered through the President's Office and is used to fund activities related to faculty and curriculum development or improvement. Awards range from $1,000 - $10,000 depending on project.

 
Professor Lisbeth Claus led a workshop on duty of care for employees in West Africa for executives of the financial services and EMI industries. The workshop, hosted by International SOS, focused on Sub-Saharan political, security and medical risks and was held at the London HQ of Control Risks on March 20-21.


 
The Swiss Business School Journal of Applied Business Research has appointed Professor Larry Ettner to the Editorial Board (research focus is on practitioner and scholarly intersections) as announced by Dr. Jorge Mongay, Editor-in-Chief.

Lisa Hylton has accepted the position of Director of Recruitment for the MBA for Professionals effective June 1, 2012. Since March of 2008, Lisa has successfully recruited over 200 MBA Candidates, coordinated and executed more than 80 events, produced 9 MBA-P New Student Orientations, and celebrated 8 MBA-P commencements.


In 2010, Lisa developed the MBA-P Peer Resource Advisor program, an effort that helps "on-board" incoming MBA-P students by connecting them to Willamette University, their professors, student colleagues, and MBA-P alumni. Lisa is a proud alumna of Willamette's MBA program. In 2009, she graduated from Leadership Portland. In 2010, she completed Atkinson's Sustainable Enterprise and Career Management and Coaching Certificates. In 2011, Lisa passed the Professional in Human Resource (PHR) certification. She has represented Willamette's MBA-P program at the National PMBA Conference the past two years in Dallas and Philadelphia and GMAC's Professional Development Program in Washington DC. Lisa is excited to move into the role of Director of Recruitment and will continue to grow the MBA-P program both in recruiting and retaining highly qualified MBA candidates.

Atkinson Outdoor Club Gets Active

The Atkinson Outdoor Club partnered with the Willamette Law Running Club to field a team in the Portland Shamrock Run. Over fifty students participated, racing distances from 8-15k. The Outdoor Club advisor, Professor Nicole Thibodeau, also joined.

This year's Atkinson Outdoor Club has been hosting a running club that meets every Thursday at 6:30 in the Mudd Lounge. Normal runs last 2-5 miles.
