Message from the Dean
 

Dear Willamette MBA Community,

Fall is off to a great start - and we have enjoyed welcoming new classes in the Early Career/Career Change MBA and MBA for Professionals programs. Record size, super profile, and great

international diversity characterizes the new EC/CC students. The MBA-P cohorts are among the best qualified in the history of the program. Truly a great start to another Atkinson year.
 
During the past month I kicked off a new round of executive visits with employers and organization partners from around Oregon and Washington. Our students are making real and positive differences as interns and employees. As our recent graduates continue their job searches, thank you in advance for your help providing informational interviews, reviewing resumes, offering networking opportunities, and providing job and internship referrals. Your assistance is very much appreciated.

I also had the pleasure of meeting a group of alumni for brunch in Washington, DC and learning more about their roles serving public, private and not-for-profit organizations in our nation's capital. Their success is a wonderful example of the applicability of the Willamette MBA across sectors.

Family Additions
Scott Mason MBA'06 and his wife are proud to announce the birth of their new baby boy, Joseph Edward Mason, born August 25th at Silverton Hospital, 8 lbs 11 oz 22 1/4" long. He joins big brothers Benjamin and Ryan.
 
Heather Roberts MBA'06 and her husband welcomed Keaton Hayes Roberts into their family on August 31st. "It's a good thing he was a big boy (8 lbs 6 oz born one week early)," writes Heather, "since he is the youngest of three rowdy boys! His older brothers, Carter and Coen are loving the new addition."

Patrick Pine '74, MBA'76, who administers the Robert F. Kennedy Medical Plan and the Juan De La Cruz Pension Plan in conjunction with the United Farm Workers of America, will be speaking at the Made in America Conference in Las Vegas in February 2013 on the topic of the impact of Health Care Reform on Taft Hartley plans. He also notes that he and his wife are anxiously awaiting the birth of a second grandson - expected to occur in the last week of September 2012.
 
Brad King MAD'76, a partner in the CliftonLarsonAllen Charlotte office is currently serving as Interim Chief Financial Officer at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, IL. Brad does this three days per week, and commutes weekly from Charlotte to Peoria. In addition, he heads up a merger project for another North Carolina hospital. On a related note, Brad found that, upon
rejoining his CPA firm in March of 2009, a new policy required reactivating his CPA license and completed over 200 hours of continuing professional education within his first two years back. His CPA license is now active in OR, NC and SC.
 
Juan Aguiar JD/MBA'02 has been named "Director de Asesoría Jurídica (E)" - Director of Legal Advice of the Secretaría de Hidrocarburos (department of oil in Ecuador) since May of this year. Juan also joined a choir several months ago and had a presentation in Quito last month. They will have another one in Guayaquil and will participate in the Cantus Angeli festival in Italy in October.
 
Zachary Dablow JD/MBA'07 recently became CEO of B4 Labs Development Group, Inc., a Salem Oregon based company marketing and commercializing a broad range of technologies. The B4 Labs website with more company information should launch in early October 2012.
 
Jeremy Maughan MBA'05 recently transitioned to a new, exciting career. Jeremy is now the CFO at Rockwell Time in Woods Cross, Utah. Rockwell Time is the leading provider of watches to the action sports enthusiasts. Check out www.rockwelltime.com for info about Rockwell and their line of products.
 

Elliott P. Dale MBA'05 is launching a new career as an attorney. Elliott has worked for the Salem law firm of Sherman, Sherman, Johnnie & Hoyt, LLP since 2007 as administrator and for the last 18 months as law clerk. He earned his law degree by attending evening classes at Lewis & Clark Law School. He was sworn in as a member of the Oregon State Bar in early October and plans to stay with the firm. His practice will be focused in the areas of banking, business, and real estate law.

Elliott and Jennifer Dale MBA'06, are expecting a new addition to their family this December. Baby boy Dale will join sisters Maddi (4) and Lizzie (11 months).

 

After a four year staff assignment as a budget appropriations manager & financial analyst for the Coast Guard in Washington, D.C., LCDR Jon Hellberg MBA'08 received orders to be the Chief of Inspections at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit in Portland, OR. Jon, Melissa, and their two children are living in Camas, WA and are happy to be back in Pacific Northwest. In September, Jon received word that he had been selected for promotion to the rank of Commander.

Toastmaster is Coming to Willamette
Current MBA for Professionals student, Marjorie Dudley is starting a Toastmaster Club for graduate students, faculty and alumni in Salem. If you are not familiar with Toastmasters, it is the premier club for gaining confidence and skills to be an effective public speaker and communicator. This Toastmasters Club will be for Willamette graduate students, faculty and alumni in Salem. It is designed for the person who just wants to improve their interviewing abilities and certainly for the person who knows they will be giving presentations frequently. Nominations Sought for Glenn L. Jackson Leadership Award

Willamette University's Atkinson Graduate School of Management invites nominations for its annual Glenn L. Jackson Leadership Award.

The Glenn L. Jackson Leadership Award was created by the Atkinson Graduate School of Management in 1984 to recognize extraordinary entrepreneurial and civic leadership benefitting the State of Oregon. The Award seeks to recognize public and private leadership in the tradition of the late Glenn L. Jackson, a true Oregonian, who served as Chairman of Pacific Power and Light (now, PacifiCorp), Chairman of the Oregon Transportation Commission and owner of several entrepreneurial enterprises. Glenn Jackson believed in making the right thing happen for Oregon and had the capacity and drive to get things done. He serves as a civic leadership model for all Oregonians.

Update from Director of Career Management: Beth Ursin

Shelby Gould's Transition: It's with sadness and pride that I announce Shelby's transition to a new role at OPB in the Development Department as the Leadership Giving Coordinator, a role that will build her career and expertise.  

Her last day at Atkinson was October 3rd. Four and a half years ago, Shelby swept into Atkinson with a positive enthusiasm that warmed the hearts of students, faculty and staff and transformed student leadership in the school. In 2011, she earned the Administrator of the Year award for her excellence.

Over her tenure, she coached many students into successful careers, she increased student involvement in events, developed stronger student leaders, and increased the quality and effectiveness of events. It was her idea to build more one-on-one time into our recruiting events and streamline multiple monthly events into one big Career Close-up Event per month. Last month, we had the largest Career Close-up Event ever with nearly 100 students in attendance and 38 representatives from 25 companies. Shelby is continually receiving compliments for her genuine interest in helping employers and students alike. Please join me in thanking Shelby for her warmth, dedication to our students and involvement with AGSM over the last 4.5 years. We will truly miss her smile, but am also proud of what she's been able to accomplish and wish her the best in her new role.

Interim Advisor – Maralynn Maltz: During the interim, while we're recruiting a new Career Management Advisor, Maralynn, who currently serves as a Faculty Internship Coordinator will increase hours to coach students and manage job postings.

September Career Close-Up Event – Personalized Career Fair: The Willamette MBA exclusive event was held at the World Trade Center and was our largest career event yet with 38 representatives from 24 companies interacting with nearly 100 of Willamette’s students. Several recruiters commented at the event and after that this was one of the best events they’ve ever attended. They loved the personalized approach and opportunity to mingle with students on a more personal note. Several students were pulled into the recruiting process at this event as well. Companies represented included: Adidas (Janna Honegger MBA'10), AKT LLP, Ashland  Partners (including Allen Xiao MBA'07), Bonneville Power Administration, Cambia Health Solutions (including Michael Doss MBA’03), Edelman (Nancy Garcia '08, MBA'10), FBI, Friends of the Children, Goodwill Industries, Intel (including Kevin McClaughry '89, MBA'91, Devin Rottiers MBA'12, Terri Savage '01, MBA'06), Internal Revenue Service, Kaiser Permanente (including Serilda Summers-McGee MBA'11), Mercy Corps International, Northwestern Mutual (Logan McCune, current MBA-P student and Recruiter), Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon Health Authority, Oregon Youth Authority, Peace Corps, Propeller Resources, Radha Consulting, RV Kuhns, Target Distribution, Tektronix, Waddell and Reed.

SHRM Speaker Series: The series kicked off with a presentation by alum, Cheryl Berger MBA'09, Senior HR Business Partner to the Engineering Team at Insitu. Cheryl also serves as Student Chapter Liaison on the Oregon State Council of SHRM.

Company Information Session: Tektronix featuring alum Eric Hagen MBA'96 and Matt Ochs MBA'12.

Net Impact Sustainability Panel included alum, Bradford McKeown MBA'11 of Energy Trust of Oregon as well as Willamette University's Joe Bowersox and representatives from Wildwood, Inc and Burgerville.

Students and Alumni in California – National Asian MBA Conference: Six students attended the National Asian MBA conference in Santa Clara California. In addition to interviewing and giving lots of elevator pitches as they approached booth after booth of Fortune 500 employers, they also did a site visit to Hitachi Data Systems and gathered together with alumni in Palo Alto. Career Management Director Beth Ursin attended and met with multiple companies to discuss recruiting at Willamette as well as visited some of our alumni. Student attendees included: Tania Weets, Bre Greenman, Anthony Tham, Maziar Mahboubian, Jillian Toda and Donald Basary. Alumni visited or attending the event included: Pat Waite MBA'84, Kushal Chakrabarty MBA'09, Ben Davidson MBA'06, Derek Rochelle MBA'11, Mark Kornei '11, MBA'12, Vladamir Subbotin MBA'10, Chris Merrifield MBA'96, Brendon Rowe MBA'11, Colin Schilling '10, MBA'11. The convention center was right in the middle of Silicon Valley and an easy walk to Yahoo!, Netflix, Cisco and EMC. Photos of the alumni/student reception and trek are included below.

Willamette Executive Development Center Presents – Certificate Program in Management Consulting

Willamette University’s new Certificate Program in Management Consulting provides an in-depth investigation and study of the practice of management consulting. Program participants will earn a Willamette University Certificate in Management Consulting and the knowledge and skills to become a high-impact external or internal consultant. The program also serves as a foundation for earning the Certified Management Consultant® (CMC®) designation awarded by the Institute of Management Consultants USA.

The program will be delivered over a one-week session beginning November 12, 2012 at the Willamette University Portland Center.

Professor Lisbeth Claus Wins EMMA Award
Lisbeth Claus was awarded the 2012 EMMA (Expatriate Management and Mobility Awards) by the Forum for Expatriate Management (Americas region) on September 13 in Las Vegas. The category for which she was nominated: Thought Leadership Survey or Research Study of the Year. The recognized publication was Duty of Care and Travel Risk Management Global

Benchmarking Study (published in 2011) that was commissioned by International SOS. The 2012 European publications based on this study (including the French and German translations of the Global Benchmarking Study, the European regional report, the German country report and the Swiss international governmental organizations report) have also been nominated and shortlisted for the European EMMA award (November in London). The Asian regional report (published in 2012) has been nominated for the Asia EMMA award (December in Hong Kong). An International SOS executive will attend these award ceremonies on her behalf.

Professor Henry Bi Receives Jerry Hudson Award for Teaching

Henry Bi, Associate Professor of Operations Management and Information Systems, received the Jerry E. Hudson Award for Teaching at Willamette University's annual faculty recognition program on September 12. The award is named after a past Willamette University president and honors faculty members who have gone above and beyond in leadership, service and teaching. Bi was recognized by Debra Ringold, Dean and JELD-WEN Professor of Free Enterprise, during the program.

Baby Soli KenEbby Zimmer was born to Kezia and current Full-time MBA student Joseph Zimmer on September 8, 2012 at 3:54pm in Silverton Family Birth Center. At birth he weighed a healthy 6 lbs 1 oz. "We're proud of him and eagerly awaiting a full nights sleep," writes Joseph.
 
Student SHRM Chapter Receives “Merit Award”
The Atkinson Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) was recognized with a "Merit Award." To be eligible for the award the group must achieve specific chapter goals set forth by its members and complete regular meetings, service projects and activities to provide value to student members. In the past year the Atkinson SHRM chapter organized numerous professional information panels with HR executives, coordinated with the local Salem and Portland chapters and attended regional and national events.
