As we recruit the next class of Willamette MBA students, we are grateful for your continued support of our efforts and your referrals of co-workers, friends and family.

We are pleased to announce a new Alumni Referral Program for candidates applying to our evening MBA for Professionals program in Salem and Portland.

When a Willamette MBA alumnus make a referral to the MBA for Professionals program and the referred candidate is admitted and enrolls, we'll credit $1000 to his or her tuition balance during the candidate's first semester in the alumnus' name. It's a great opportunity to empower someone to make a solid investment in his or her future and allows our alumni to extend their legacy as successful Willamette MBA graduates.

Willamette MBA Sponsors Annual Portland Business Journal Event

For the sixth year in a row, the Willamette University MBA program sponsored the Portland Business Journal's "Forty Under 40" awards. Earning the "Forty Under 40" recognition is no easy task - over 300 pic

professionals are nominated from a variety of business, government and not-for-profit organizations. Given this "do well and do good" mentality, it is no surprise that many Willamette University and Willamette MBA graduates have made the "Forty Under 40" list each year. In 2013, three Willamette University alums stood out from the crowd and made the list:

Laila Umpleby, Make-A-Wish Foundation
Shobi Dahl, Dave's Killer Bread

At the February 14 event, the Willamette MBA program hosted a table full of alumni (who also happened to be past "Forty Under 40" recipients).

Entrepreneurship / Angel Fund Speakers Series

Several times per semester, the Willamette MBA Angel Fund hosts a special guest speaker at either the Portland Center or on the Salem campus. This may be a once in a life time opportunity to meet some of the most respected entrepreneurs in our community, and ask them the burning questions about starting a firm or working inside a fast growing startup.

Willamette MBA Hosts Toastmasters Group
Toastmasters is a great professional development opportunity in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. Willamette's own chapter - Will U Speak - meets on Mondays from 4:05pm - 5:05pm, Atkinson Mudd Building. Check it out on Facebook or contact Marjorie Dudley with questions. MBA for Professionals GMAT/GRE Prep Sessions and Social Events

The MBA for Professionals has a number of events this spring. Dean Debra Ringold will be hosting luncheons for current students, prospective students and alumni in Salem and Portland. GMAT/GRE Prep Sessions are being offered, along with other social events.

Update from Director of Career Management: Beth Ursin
Northwest MBA Career Conference: On February 4th, over 300 students and 20 companies descended into the Oregon Convention Center for the 7th annual Northwest MBA Career Conference sponsored by a consortium of seven AACSB accredited schools in the Northwest.    

After a keynote provided by Craig Wessel, Publisher of the Portland Business Journal, students chose between a variety of company information sessions and workshops and talked one-on-one with recruiters at the EXPO. Participating organizations included Aequitas Capital Management, Banfield (now owned by Mars), Bonneville Power Administration, Cambia Health, Daimler, Definitive Insights, FBI, Hitachi Consulting, Marcus & Millichap, Northwestern Mutual, NSHMBA, Oregon Secretary of State, Portland General Electric, Portland Trailblazers, Rubicon, Slalom Consulting, Target, US Department of State, and Waddell & Reed.

Oregon Fellows & Hatfield Residence Information Session: On Jan 28, Oregon Fellows and Hatfield Residence provided a company information session with past recipients prior to the February deadline. Willamette currently has a number of finalists in the process.

Atkinson Public Administration Association Brown Bag: On February 4, two recruiters with the OregonĀ  Department of Business and Consumer Services joined students interested in public management and provided a workshop on "How to find a Meaningful Career at the State of Oregon," covering topics which included an overview of the new Oregon E-Recruit System.

Career Management & Coaching Certificate Workshop - Career Action Plan: On February 8, AGSM alum and contributing faculty member, Sue Wilson MAD'77, and Career Management Director, Beth Ursin, taught an all day session on developing and managing your career action plan. This was one segment of the Career Management and Coaching Certificate Program developed for MBA for Professionals students.

Peace Corps Info Session: On February 19, MBA candidates joined an information session organized by the Career Office at the College of Liberal Arts.

DA Davidson Trek: On February 22, the Atkinson Finance Club met at 3:45 AM to drive a van up to Portland to visit DA Davidson. Students were present for the 5 AM meeting of the analysts to hear key things that were happening in the world which might affect the markets that day followed by several meetings with executives to analysts.

Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Lunch Chat: On February 26, alum Steve Boedigheimer MBA'80, Deputy Director for the Division of State and Local Readiness for the Centers for Disease Control, joined a group of students for lunch and talked about his career and working for the federal government.

This event is developed to help students network with professionals. The Consulting Association is teaming with Career Management to provide a Case Interviewing Workshop. Executive Program for Attorneys in Business

This May the Willamette University Executive Development Center will present a unique program targeted to attorneys who work in business or make business decisions for their organizations.

The Leadership and Management for Attorneys in Business program offers a structured approach to business that provides the tools, resources and concepts to increase the value and productivity of any attorney working within a company. Participants will learn strategies to become better lawyers and leaders in their organizations by understanding and thinking about business issues the way business decision-makers think about them. Participating attorneys will learn:

  • to adjust to the role of legal adviser, project leader or active participant in management decisions within an organization
  • how legal advice relates to business strategy and financial statements
  • to solve problems for internal business partners to add value
  • to assess and manage legal risks within the context of acceptable business risks
  • to communicate more effectively within a company's culture and corporate governance

The program is delivered in an interactive learning format, May 5-9, 2013, at Willamette University's Portland, Oregon Center (opening dinner and panel of general counsels on May 5; 9:00am-5:00pm each day, except Thursday departure at 4:00pm). The sessions are designed to be highly interactive between the participants and instructors, who are experienced leaders and understand the intersection of legal and business issues. The program is approved for CLE's in Oregon and Washington.

Competitive Intelligence One-Day Seminar April 24; Webinar March 18

The Executive Development Center, in association with contributing professor Sean Campbell, is pleased to present a one day seminar on competitive intelligence in Portland on April 24 titled "Building Competitive Strategies with Greater Insight." You can sample topics presented during this special event during a 15-minute webinar with professor Campbell on March 16 at 10:00am PDT.

Book Club to Launch Again

Back by popular demand, the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, through a generous gift from Willamette University Trustee George Hoyt, is pleased to offer the next series in the Willamette MBA Alumni Book Club this spring.

With the tremendous response we received in the fall, the book club will now be open to 100 alumni per session at no cost to the participant.

The Journal of Management Development has accepted Mark Ahn and Larry Ettner's article "Are Leadership Values Different Across Generations: A Comparative Leadership Analysis of CEO's and MBA's."


 
On March 13, Professor Steven Maser will be hosting a webinar for the Association of Government Accountants entitled, "Improving Government Contracting: Lessons from Bid Protests at the Department of Defense." He'll be presenting a paper entitled, "Recurring Conflicts Between An Organization and Outside Parties as Symptoms of a Misaligned Management Control System" at the meetings of the Western Academy of Management in Santa Fe, New Mexico. March 14-16.


 
Professor Lisbeth Claus is spending a sabbatical semester in Europe, splitting her time between an academic institution (Ecole de Management, Strasbourg, France), a major global corporation (International SOS,London, UK) and international government organization (EU, Brussels and Strasbourg).


First, she was a visiting professor for one month at EMS Strasbourg, a Willamette University partner institution, where she taught an international human resource management course and worked with a colleague on a research paper regarding cultural adjustment of international assignees. While in Strasbourg, she visited and made contacts with delegates of the European Council and Eurpean Parliament. Subsequently, she completed a professional internship with International SOS at their Cheswick Park HQ in London. On February 21-22, she was a keynote speaker on "How is duty of care being interpreted by companies," at the first annual duty of care conference organized by Quaynote. She also planned and delivered a one-day workhop for UK corporate clients on duty of care execution (February 27). During here stay in Brussels, she will use her research to contribute to the ongoing discussion on safety for workers traveling abroad. A new book, entitled Global HR Practitioners Handbook, will be released in March. She is the editor-in-chief of the handbook and author/contributor to four of the 15 chapters.
 
Fred Thompson published "Corporate Governance and Lobbying Strategies" in the Journal of Business Research (Volume 66, Issue 4 (2013), Pages 547-553), with Ike Mathur, Manohar Singh, and Al Nejadmalayeri.

Aimee Akimoff MBA'11 presented at this year's IMPACT Conference, the largest annual conference focused on the civic engagement of college students in community service, service-learning, community-based research, advocacy and other forms of social action. Her session, called "Graduate School: Launching Your Career in Non-Profit and Public Management," was repeated twice during the conference. Willamette MBA was also a featured sponsor of the event.

Current Full-time MBA student Hussein Al Haddad and his wife, Fatimah, proudly gave birth to their first son, Ali, born Monday, Feb 11, 2013 at 10:20pm, weighing in at 6.11 lbs and measuring 19.5 inches.
