Message from the Dean
 

Dear Willamette MBA Community,

It's the middle of the fall semester, which means students and faculty are busy with projects, presentations and activities.

The season also offers ample opportunities for alumni and friends to connect with us and each other over the coming months.

Our new series of "Atkinson Alumni Inspired Conversations" is one such example. The series will launch with our initial session on November 11 on "Building Sustainable Communities." These events provide an opportunity for alumni to learn and discuss management hot topics with Willamette MBA faculty members and industry experts. The November 11 session is available online and on the Salem campus.

The MBA for Professionals program is also gearing up for a new cohort in Portland this January. Please connect with us at upcoming events including our Dean's lunches and class visits.

Family Additions
 
Woody English MBA'05 and Anna (Öfverström) English, Atkinson exchange student '04, celebrated the birth of their daughter Ebba Linnea English on September 24th. They live in Washington, DC where Anna is a management consultant at Accenture and Wood works for the Department of State in the foreign service. The family is preparing to move to Angola in the spring for a few years for Woody's first post.
 
Alycia Huskins Bleeker JD/MBA'06 and her husband, Adam, would like to announce the birth of their first baby. Baby girl Graysen was born June 2nd at 6 lbs 6 oz and 20 inches.
 
Mark Brown MBA '03 and his wife Amy recently welcomed a sixth child to their family. Jonas Patrick Brown was born on June 1, 2011 in Rochester, MN, where Mark and Amy have resided for the past six-plus years. Jonas joins siblings Holden, Lili, Asher, Miriam and Eliza in the Brown household (pictured right).
 

Mark also recently accepted a new position within Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS). He is now an operations administrator at MCHS in Owatonna, MN, about 40 miles west of Rochester. Mark serves as the administrative liaison for the family practice, pediatrics, urgent care, laboratory and radiology departments within this large, multispecialty group practice. He reports that he has enjoyed working on both the hospital and group practice sides of healthcare administration within the Mayo Clinic family of practices.

 
Tricia (Palmer) Olson JD/MBA'03 and husband, Troy, adopted their daughter, Madelyn Yihong Olson, on May 9, 2010. Madelyn was born on February 16, 2009 in the Fujian Province of China.
 
Nuptials

Benjamin Reim MBA'05 and Nancy Cherng (University of Washington) were married on August 6th, 2011 in Peshastin, WA. The venue was Beecher Hill House. They now live and work in Seattle, WA.
 

Raution Jaiswal MBA'09 will tie the knot on the 21st of November 2011. The wedding will take place in Kolkata, India as a traditional Indian wedding with 700 guests from all over the country. A reception will follow on the 24th of November, with another 500 guests attending. International guests from the US will include Raution's co-workers and Mary Hadley MBA'09, an Atkinson classmate.

Jorge Ordonez MBA'05 recently returned from Costa Rica, where he made a presentation and led a roundtable discussion on "Calculating the Cost of Capital" at a two-day meeting of the Coordinating Association of Central American Energy Regulators (ACERCA). The meeting was made possible through a USAID cooperative agreement with the Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC ). Jorge works as a Senior Financial Economist for the Oregon Public Utility Commission. "This was a great opportunity to share what I've leared at the Oregon PUC and network with other utility regulators in the United States and Central America," he reports.
 
Scott McIntyre MBA'89 has been named PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's Global Government and Public Sector leader responsible for PwC's $1.5b public sector active in 152 countries. He continues to lead PwC's US Public Sector practice focused on delivering management consulting services to the US Federal Government, State and Local governments, and Multilateral Development Organizations.
 
Takao Yamamoto '74, MBA'76 will retire this month as a Senior Vice President of Union Bank. "I am finishing thirty five years of a wonderful banking career after I graduated from Atkinson Graduate School of Management," says Takao."I surely had a great education while I was a student at this school."
 
In October 2011, Nick Jwayad MBA'01 completed an Executive Education Program on 21st Century Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Nick serves as the Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Chief Information Officer of Portland Public Schools.
 
Elena Noyes '08, MBA'09 has just accepted the position as Development Programme Coordinator for the New Zealand High Commission in Tonga, a position she is excited to take up after being involved in development in the country through other means for some time. After working for two years in Tonga via Peace Corps at Tonga Development Bank, she and her husband are currently concluding their Peace Corps service and are looking forward to starting other full time work in the next few months.
 
In July, Tony Jones '02, MBA'05 accepted a new position with the global PR agency Waggener Edstrom Worldwide as Senior Manager of Insight & Analytics. Tony oversees three teams that provide traditional and social media analysis for the agency's largest client Microsoft. He is currently working out of the agency's Lake Oswego office.
 
Sid Parakh MBA'02 was assigned an interim role as the Director of Research at his company - McAdams Wright Ragen, based in Seattle.

Now Accepting Nominations for the 2012 Willamette Alumni Awards

Know an amazing Willamette alumnus? Consider nominating someone for an alumni citation award. There are three awards to choose from:

  • The Young Alumni Leadership Award is given to recent graduates (10 years or less past graduation) who have already made noteworthy contributions to their communities, their industry, or their causes.
  • The Distinguished Alumni Citation is awarded to alumni of all ages and backgrounds and recognizes extraordinary achievement.
  • The Sparks Medallion recipients have demonstrated a unique level of loyalty and the commitment to the University, as was embodied by one of our most revered alumni, Lestle J. Sparks, the award's namesake.

Making a nomination is easy. Just do one of the following:

Willamette MBA Students Partner with a New Round of PACE Public and Non-Profit Clients

This August, incoming MBA students to the Early Career and Career Change MBA program were introduced to a group of PACE public and non-profit clients, some of which have partnered with Willamette in the past and others who were new clients. Update from the Career Management Team: Beth Ursin & Shelby Gold
Over the last two months, the Career Management Team and the Student Professional Associations have provided numerous opportunities for students to connect with employers.  

 

We just finished our October Career Close-up Event which took place at the World Trade Center in Portland. Fifty six students gathered to learn about opportunities with Avanade, AXA Advisors, Craft Brewer's Alliance, City of Portland, ESI, FBI, Nike, Northwestern Mutual, Mass Mutual, PCC Structurals and State Farm Insurance. Alumni participants included Keith Carrato '96 , Jenee Bader '98, MBA'10, Nabeel Ashour MBA'11, Matt Benjamin '02, MBA'05 and Jarvez Hall MBA'07. A hallmark of our Career Close-up Events is an opportunity for each student to meet one-on-one with an employer and for each employer to have an opportunity to meet with every student in a small group. Employers and students tell us that this casual yet structured approach to networking is much preferred to a traditional career fair.

Company site visits or Treks during this two month period enabled students to visit a work location, learn about the history and core mission of an organization as well as meet employees who work there. Over the last two months, the Career Management Team took students to visit Adidas, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Mercy Corps and Don Pancho Tortillas. In addition, the Atkinson Project Management Association brought students to visit Portland Metro and Hitachi Consulting.

Functional Panels give students an opportunity to hear from multiple people who work in different jobs within a job function or area of expertise. We hosted three panels over this period. The Atkinson Finance Panel featured alum Courtney Ranstrom MBA'05 from Ranstrom Financial, Kristin Bauer MBA'05 from Umpqua Bank and current student, Amy Vukovich from Intel. The Joint Degree Panel (JD/MBA) featured Byron Shinkle JD/MBA'06, Keri Trask-Lazarus '97, JD/MBA'01, C'01 and Shelli Honeywell JD/MM'93, C'93. The Atkinson Consulting Association and the Atkinson Society for Human Resource Management Association's co-hosted a panel of Human Resources Consultants from Boly –Welch and Northwest Evaluation Association. The Atkinson Project Management Association Information Session featured Portland Chapter PMI Professionals from CLIMB and Hitachi Consulting.

Company Information Sessions: As we moved into fall recruiting season, three alumni from Accenture and Intel Corporation came on campus to provide company information sessions to students who were applying to their organizations. Alumni included Andrew Clark '09, MBA'10, Kevin McClaughry '89, MBA'91 and Jonathan Chappelle '95, MBA'99.

Featured Alumni and Professionals: Keith Brown, Director of STG Strategic University and Industry Alliances from IBM was invited on campus for our fall Power Lunch. Power Lunches are an opportunity for students to eat lunch while hearing from an executive. In September, alum Fadi Bouri MBA'06 visited from Dubai and shared his experiences working for Rasmala Investments.

Professor Lisbeth Claus presented a paper entitled, Sending employees to the bottom 60 failed states: performance and retention of international assignees of an international NGO" at the NHRMA conference in Seattle, WA on October 6. The action research project was part of an advanced global HR Willamette MBA experiential class in the spring of 2011.


 
Professor Larry Ettner and former Professor Mark Ahn have received notice that their paper presented in June 2011 in Athens, Greece has been selected to be published in a book titled: Leadership & Management in a Changing World: Lessons from Ancient East and West Philosophy; Ed. Prastacos, G.P., Fuming, W., and Soderquist, K.E., our chapter selected is Values-Based Leadership: Enduring Lessons From the Aeneid. The book will be published in early 2012.


 

Professor Henry Bi recently had a paper accepted for publication:

H.H. Bi, J. Nolt. Toward a formal semantics for control-flow process models. Journal of Database Management. Forthcoming.


 
Professor Steve Maser represented the School at the annual meeting of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration in Kansas City, MO, October 19-22. He served on a Site Visit Chairs Roundtable, panels on Public Service Values Across the Curriculum and Accreditation First-Timers, and a workshop: Student Learning Outcomes and Competency Assessment.

MBA Student finds Entrepreneurial Success at Startup Weekend

Willamette MBA Student, Loren Crawford, participated in Portland Startup Weekend on October 14-16. Startup Weekend is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. Loren's team, called Guru Signal, came in 3rd place overall and has interested investors.

Portland Startup Weekend had about 100 attendees, half technical specialists and half business people. Sponsors included Intel, Microsoft, and PIE (Wieden and Kennedy's Incubator). Mentors were present from many successful Portland Startups and the Portland Seed Fund.

On Friday night of the Weekend, 45 venture ideas were pitched and the attendees voted, with 15 ideas being chosen. Attendees formed their own teams based on interest and had until Sunday afternoon to present a minimum viable product or prototype for their business. Loren worked on market research, business/marketing strategy and preparing the presentation for the team.

"The way Guru Signal works is if a customer's computer or other electronics break down or have some other problem," says Loren, "they can use our mobile enabled website to find local IT professionals who are available to fix the problem almost immediately in the customers home. The service will be offered at a flat hourly rate that is below competitors like Geek Squad. Contractors will be vetted and then reviewed by customers using a social review system in order to ensure awesome customer service! No more waiting for service and no more searching and vetting to find IT contractors. It's like AirBnB but for IT."
