Biography

Professor Messick received his BA in Psychology from the University of Delaware. His graduate degrees, MA and PhD in the same area, were awarded by the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He served on the faculty of the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 1964 through 1991, when he accepted the Morris and Alice Kaplan Chair of Ethics and Decision in Management at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He retired in 2007.

His research focus has been on social and ethical aspects of decision making and information processing. Most recently he has been studying leadership in large and small organizations, from corporations to basketball teams. He has written extensively and has published more than 150 articles, chapters, and books. He was the editor-in-chief of the prestigious Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and has served on the editorial boards of numerous international journals. He was the recipient of two Fulbright fellowships support research in the Netherlands and we was awarded a national Academy of Science East/West Fellowship to pursue research in Budapest, Hungary.

He has received numerous teaching awards in his executive MBA classes and he has taught executives in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, in addition to North America.
