Early in his career, Heatherington served as an administrator for the YMCA, Marylhurst College, the Westminster Presbyterian Church, and the Oregon Republican Party. In 1977, he found his calling in the medical field when he became Executive Director of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon, a position he held for the next 30 years. In 1984, Heatherington and four physicians founded FamilyCare, Inc., a not-for-profit Medicaid-managed care company. Under his leadership, FamilyCare, Inc. grew from an initial enrollment of 500 members to more than 88,000 members today. He also founded and dedicated many years of service as Chair of the Coalition for a Healthy Oregon. He serves as a Visiting Professor in Health Policy Administration at McMasters University in Ontario, Canada.
Heatherington’s community service, and personal dedication to people and causes important to him are exemplary. He has also served as a foster parent to five children.
