University Awards Grants for Sustainability Projects


New sustainability grants will address bike racks and helmets.

Willamette awarded grants to six innovative sustainability projects recently as part of a celebration of National Sustainability Day.

The university awards grants annually to Willamette students, faculty, administrators or staff from any of the schools who wish to undertake projects that promote and add visibility to sustainability efforts and build rituals and celebrations around the core values of sustainability.

This year's winners are:

  • Geneva Hooten '11: Hooten's project, called The Grateful Head, is intended to increase bike safety awareness and helmet use by educating people about good helmet use and subsidizing the cost of purchasing helmets.
  • Ross Stout '85, MBA'93, director of Campus Safety: Stout's project will add more bicycle racks on campus.
  • Katy Giombolini '10: Giombolini plans to add cold frames to the Kaneko Community Garden to allow students to grow plants during the spring semester and to create a partnership with Willamette Academy, the university's college access program for underrepresented youths.
  • Alycia Edgeworth Kennedy JD'10: Edgeworth Kennedy's project, a case from the College of Law's Sustainability Clinic, will help empower the low-income and minority communities who may be adversely impacted by plans to replace a bridge that spans the Columbia River. The project will help these communities understand and participate in the process.
  • Jeff Dobbins and Wendy Johnson, Oregon Law Commission: This project will help the College of Law faculty, staff, students and library patrons use less paper by increasing the use of electronic documents and double-sided printing.
  • Jennifer Johns, on behalf of Zena Farm and the Alternative Agriculture Community: This grant will fund a Spring Planting Community Celebration at Zena Farm, located at Willamette's research station 15 miles west of Salem. The festival's goal is to increase awareness and understanding about local foodsheds and alternative methods of organic farming.
