Not Unto Ourselves Alone...
The holidays are in full swing and it can be felt around campus. Students and faculty muddle through final exams and projects; staff work hard to meet year-end deadlines. Still, we manage to find time for festivity and celebration. More importantly, we find time to give something back.
It is not news to most of us that the Willamette community, those of us on campus and those who have moved on, is made up of people who care. Our motto, "Not unto ourselves alone are we born," is something that permeates Willamette and all who come here. But seldom does it shine as brightly as during the holiday season.
Amidst all the hustle and bustle, many here take part in work that helps others. Annually, a number of projects take place in support of those in the Salem community. These projects are driven by departments, Greek houses, athletic teams, student organizations and campus artists. And this only scratches the surface as individuals head in to the community to help where their heart calls.
This outreach is both inspiring and humbling. It's a reminder that this community represents something greater than simply an institution of higher education and also that many of us are lucky to have the opportunities, resources and security it affords us. I am proud of the Bearcats across the world who improve the lives of others every day.
So as you rush through your list of holiday to-do's, please take a moment and remember Willamette's motto. Remember the generosity of those who came before you and made the university what it is today. Remember those in your community who might need a helping hand this season, and year round. Take action.
You can join us in celebration of the season and our community at the annual lighting of the Star Trees on Saturday, December 5 at 6:30 p.m. There are opportunities for dining at Goudy Commons and a number of wonderful musical performances. Beta Theta Pi fraternity will also be sponsoring their 16th annual PennyCoat Clothing Drive to benefit those in need. Tables for donations of gently used, clean clothing will be set up in Goudy Commons and near the Star Trees.
