Willamette University, Students at the Mill Stream

Red Light, Green Light game for the history books

The Willamette community will descend on the Quad Friday, Aug. 30 for a spectacular and quirky world-record attempt. The event is being organized in consultation with Guinness World Records.

Alumni are invited.

The record activity is an enormous game of Red Light, Green light, a simple but exciting game many will remember fondly from the playground. The current record stands at 755 participants; WU is aiming for 1,000 or more.

(No Red Light, Green Light expertise is required.)

President Thorsett will call the game, and other special guests will be on hand as witnesses.

How to participate

If you want to be involved, show up to the Quad Friday, Aug. 30 by 4:30 p.m. There is no pre-registration. People will be funneled into a roped-off section of the field (to ensure accurate counting) before the game itself, which begins at 5:30. Arrive on time, since we cannot guarantee access; if we reach capacity early, some might not get in. All are invited to join in the festivities before and after, however.

Following the game, participants are welcome to stay around for treats or to connect with friends. The alumni office will be on hand, too. The official announcement of the record attempt's success will come after verification by Guinness.
