Docent Program

Please note that we are not accepting applications at this time. We hope you will check back with us in the future.

The Docent Program at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art is an important component of the Museum's educational mission. The word docent comes from the Latin verb docere, meaning "to teach" or "to lead." Docents are volunteers who provide a welcoming and engaging experience for museum visitors and interpret the permanent and special exhibitions for a variety of audiences. These include K-12 school groups, adult and senior groups and the general public.

Training for new and active docents is ongoing and takes place every Monday morning between September and May. Weekly class includes lectures and sessions in the museum's exhibitions.

Docents are asked to make a two-year commitment once they graduate, although most docents enjoy it so much they often remain active for many years.

"Being a docent has given me the opportunity to deepen by personal knowledge of art, enjoy the camaraderie of our volunteer docents, and especially, touch the imagination of a child motivated by the work of an inspired artist."

June Scott Brothers, HFMA docent.
