Bearcats drop two important games at Puget Sound
TACOMA, Wash. - The Puget Sound Loggers bolted to a comfortable 15-0 lead in game one, scoring in each of the first three innings. The lead was anything but cushy as Willamette came back on the Loggers, with six runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning. The comeback fell short and the Loggers prevailed 15-6. Game two was more of a defensive battle with the play of the game going to Senior Jenny Peterson of the Loggers. In the top of the seventh inning with one out, Anna Byers of Willamette sent a line-shot down the right field line and Peterson made a spectacular diving catch to rob Byers of a double. Weidkamp caught Hayley Boston looking for a called third strike to preserve the Logger win, 4-3.
The Loggers pounded the Bearcats with 18 hits in the first game with five different Loggers collecting two hits or more. UPS put four runs up in the first inning on three hits and one Bearcat error. In the bottom of the third inning the Loggers batted-around, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits. Marissa Gillaspie cleared the bases with a double for 3 Loggers RBI's. Jill Voorhies added 2 RBI's with a single. Willamette rebounded with six runs in the top of the fourth inning on five hits and two Logger errors. A single by Darcy Hertel, followed by a triple from Ashley Keaton began the Willamette scoring. Singles by Nicole Romero, Meaghan Sussman and a walk issued to Kate Cashill loaded the bases for April Greer, who was hit by a pitch. A fielder's choice scored the next Bearcat run and Meghan Walsh for the Loggers got the final out with a strike out.
Gillaspie was 2-4, scored once and earned 4 RBI's for the Loggers. Voorhies was 3-4 at the plate with three runs scored and 2 RBI's. Coutrney Ludwig was 3-4 at the plate with one run scored and 2 RBI's. Marcie Hagen was 1-2 at the plate with 2 RBI's, for Willamette.
It was the Bearcats scoring first in game two Marcie Hagen singled, stole second and was brought home by Darcy Hertel's single to center. Puget Sound came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning as Jen Itano singled and Senior Heather Lovejoy took the pitch deep over the left field fence for a 2-run homer. The Loggers played add-on with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Gena Frazier tripled to bring home Baxter. Willamette answered with two runs in the top of fifth inning to knot the score at 3-3. Willamette had singles by Sherri Marbie, Shestin Pethrus and Hertel for the two runs on three hits. The Loggers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Ludwig singled, Gillaspie walked, Peterson walked to load the bases and Frazier hit the sacrifice fly to center to bring home the run.
The Bearcats drop to 16-13 overall and 10-8. Puget Sound took one big step towards claiming second place in the Northwest Conference standings. Puget Sound is in a battle with Linfield College fo second place. Linfield is playing a three game series against PLU this weekend. The Loggers are 22-9-1 overall and 14-5-1 in the NWC with the two wins today. The two teams will complete the three-game series with one game on Sunday, starting at noon.
