Benjamin named to Verizon All-District team for baseball
Outfielder Matt Benjamin was named on Thursday as one of 10 members of the Verizon Academic All-America Baseball All-District VIII (West Coast) College Division Team.
Benjamin, who has a 3.43 g.p.a. in business economics, will graduate on Sunday, May 12. His name will be forwarded to the national ballot to be considered for All-America honors.
Benjamin becomes the first Willamette athlete to earn an All-District honor in two sports in the same school year. He was named to the All-District team last fall in football.
Just 10 days ago, Benjamin was named the winner of the J.H. Booth Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year award at Willamette. He was a 2001 first-team All-Northwest Conference defensive back in football and is coming off a baseball season that saw him hit .299 with eight doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 28 RBI in 33 games.
