Luerken wins singles title at PCRC's
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Willamette senior Erick Luerken won the men’s singles title Saturday during the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma. He won the championship over rowers from Loyola Marymount, Humboldt State, Chapman, UC-Davis (two entrants) and Oregon.
Luerken finished the 2,000-meter race in a time of 8:36.1, exactly 15 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Loyola Marymount. The scullers battled 20 mile-per-hour cross and headwinds during the race.
Because there is no national championship event for scullers, Luerken completed his season with the PCRC victory. He also won the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Association championship on March 27 at Lake Stevens, Wash.
Luerken, who graduated May 12 with a degree in mathematics, plans to continue rowing this summer in Seattle at the Lake Washington Rowing Club’s Elite Development Program.
