Willamette's Women's Novice 8 wins Silver Medal at WIRA Championships
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — Willamette’s Women’s Novice 8 crew placed second overall Sunday at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships at Lake Natoma, earning a Silver Medal.
The Bearcat crew finished the 2,000-meter course in a time of 7:05.6, trailing only San Diego State’s finish of 7:03.1. Third place in the race went to Puget Sound (7:08.7).
Willamette had four other crews qualify for Sunday’s finals in the two-day championships. The Women’s Pair of Jenny Schaecher and Aubrey Merryman placed fourth in a time of 8:45.7, missing out on the Bronze Medal by just 0.3 seconds (Puget Sound placed third in 8:45.5).
Two Bearcat crews placed fifth: the Men’s Novice 4 took fifth in 7:06.2, while the Men’s Pair of Blake Gaskill and Trent Parker placed fifth in 7:46.5.
Willamette’s Men’s Varsity 4 took sixth in 7:02.4.
The next competition for the Bearcat rowing teams will back in Rancho Cordova in two weeks for the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on May 18.
