Gaspard, Peterson named to District VIII all-academic team

Willamette quarterback Tyler Gaspard and fullback Justin Peterson were named on Thursday to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII (West Coast) team for football. Their name will be forwarded to the national ballot for All-America consideration.

Gaspard, a junior from Olympia, Wash., has a 4.00 GPA in mathematics. He has thrown for 564 yards and four touchdowns in helping the Bearcats to a 6-3 record.

Gaspard has been on the Dean's List twice and is the recipient of four academic scholarships.

Of the 24 members of the All-District team - which comprises players from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA schools - Gaspard is the only one with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Peterson, a senior from Mercer Island, Wash., has a 3.55 GPA in economics. His 720 rushing yards through nine games has helped the Bearcats become the NCAA Division III leader in rushing at 371.1 yards per game.

Peterson has rushed for more than 1,700 yards in his college career and shares the school record for the longest run from scrimmage (90 yards) in WU history.

Peterson was a Verizon All-District VIII choice last year and an honorable mention Northwest Conference selection.
