Johnson's 28 points leads WU past CSU-Hayward 86-58
HAYWARD, Calif. — Visiting Willamette shot 56 percent from the field and out-rebounded Cal State-Hayward 43-20 en route to an 86-58 victory over the hosts in the second and final night of the Pioneer Classic.
The Bearcats (6-2) were led by senior post Marques Johnson, who led all scorers with 28 points after converting 11 of 12 shots from the floor. He also canned six of eight free throws.
Willamette, which fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater 60-55 on Saturday night, also got 14 points and five steals from senior point guard Ryan Hepp. Junior wing Miles Sandgathe added 12 points for the winners.
CSU-Hayward (1-8) was led by George Trapp’s 11 points.
The Bearcats shot 61.3 percent for the game, compared to just 38.9 percent by the Pioneers. WU dominated the boards thanks in part to nine rebounds from freshman post Brennan Garrelts and eight caroms from senior wing B.J. Dobrkovsky.
Willamette returns home for its next game, hosting Pacific Lutheran on Friday in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams. Tip-off is 8 p.m., following the women’s game between the two schools.
