Lund's 21 points, 10 rebounds not quite enough at Whitman
WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Deanna Lund scored 21 points and pulled
down 10 rebounds Friday night, but host Whitman hit a pair of key
shots late in the regulation and overtime to come away with a 78-77
Conference overtime win over Willamette in the Sherwood Center.
The loss was the Bearcats’ fourth straight and dropped their records to 6-7 overall and 0-4 in the NWC. WU plays at Whitworth on Saturday.
Willamette rallied in the final five minutes of regulation and led by three points in the final minute, but the Missionaries’ Mandee Romero hit a three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to tie the score at 69-69 and force the extra period.
In overtime, Lund almost single-handedly kept the Bearcats close. She had WU’s first three points of the period, and when she banked in a 17-footer with 39 seconds left, the visitors led 77-75. However, Whitman’s Miryia Libbey hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining for the final points of the game.
Sarah O’Brien’s desperation shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
The Bearcats also got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Rosie Contri. Simmie Muth added 13 points and O’Brien chipped in with 10.
WU dominated the hosts on the boards, 52-30. But Whitman out-shot Willamette handily from the field, 45 percent to 35 percent.
