MEN’S BASKETBALL: Bearcats (7-2, 1-0 NWC) open conference play with win over PLU
THIS WEEK: Willamette takes on Lewis & Clark, Linfield

Post Marques Johnson (Sr., Grant HS) converted 11 of 12 shots from
the field to lead all scorers with 28 points as the Bearcats
breezed to a 28-point win over host CSU-Hayward in the second and
final day of the Pioneer Classic in Hayward, Calif. Point guard
Ryan Hepp (Sr., Century HS) added 14 points and five steals, while
wing Miles Sandgathe (Jr., Pleasant Hill HS) added 12 points.
Willamette out-shot the Pioneers 56.1 percent to 38.9 percent.
Jan. 4 at Willamette 62, Pacific Lutheran 37
Willamette took a commanding 20-point lead (35-15) at the half and
stretched it out to 30 points midway through the second period to
cruise to the victory in the NWC opener for the Bearcats. WU ended
up shooting 48.0 percent for the game, compared to just 25.5
percent for the Lutes. WU wing Miles Sandgathe (Jr., Pleasant Hill
HS) led all scorers with 14 points and he added six rebounds. Post
Marques Johnson (Sr., Grant HS) added 10 points and a game-high 11
rebounds, while wing Harold Sublett Jr. (So., Hayden HS, Ariz.)
chipped in with 10 points and eight boards. The Bearcats
out-rebounded PLU 48-25.
NOTES: Willamette leads the NWC in scoring defense at 61.8 points
per game.
ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: Post Marques Johnson (Sr., Grant HS) has
been named to the all-tournament team in each of the three
tournaments Willamette has played in. He also was named MVP of the
Bud Presley Classic and Co-MVP of the John Lewis Holiday Classic.
Point guard Ryan Hepp (Jr., Century HS) was the other Co-MVP of the
John Lewis Holiday Classic and was named to the all-tourney team of
the Bud Presley Classic. Wing Miles Sandgathe (Jr., Pleasant Hill
HS) was also named to the Bud Presley all-tournament team.

# The all-time school record for wins by a Willamette head coach is 277 by the late John Lewis. From 1947-67 (20 seasons), Lewis’ teams went 277-239 and won or shared seven conference titles. Lewis also coached baseball at WU and served as athletic director.
