Muth tallies 15 in loss at Whitworth
SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth College handed visiting Willamette University a 72-40 defeat in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse with dominating defense and rebounding.
The Pirates (10-5 overall, 4-2 NWC) held the Bearcats (6-8, 0-5) to 29% shooting from the field and outrebounded the visitors 50-32. Tiffany Speer led the Bucs with 21 points, while Sarah Shogren added 11. Speer and Shogren joined Chrissy Oneal with nine rebounds.
Simmie Muth led Willamette with 15 points and six rebounds.
The game was never close. The Pirates jumped to an 11-3 lead less than five minutes into the game, as Shogren had seven and Speer had four. The Bearcats were never closer than eight points after that. Whitworth led by as many as 24 points in the first half before going to halftime with a 38-17 lead.
The Pirates quickly extended the lead in the second half, and led by as many as 41 points (70-29) when Julie Marsh made a pair of free throws.
Whitworth, which has won three straight, will host Whitman College on Tuesday night. Willamette will host Pacific, also on Tuesday.
