In the second day of the Division III Shootout in Honolulu, the
Bearcats used balanced scoring to snap a two-game losing skid.
Rosie Contri (Sr., Douglas HS, Minden, Nev.), Simmie Muth (Jr.,
North Bend HS) and Deanna Lund (Jr., Ridgefield HS, Wash.) each
scored 15 points in the victory. Muth also added three assists and
three steals, while Lund converted 7 of 8 field goals and pulled
down six rebounds. WU shot an even 50.0 percent for the game.
Dec. 30 Willamette 92, Elms (Mass.) 40
Guard Simmie Muth (Jr., North Bend HS) scored a career-high 26
points as the Bearcats eased past Elms (Mass.) 92-40. Muth made 11
of 18 shots from the field, including 2 of 3 three-pointers. She
also had five assists and three steals in WU’s most lop-sided win
of the season. The win gave WU a 2-1 record in the Division III
Shootout in Honolulu.
Jan. 4 Pacific Lutheran 50, at Willamette 39
Defending NWC champion Pacific Lutheran held Willamette to 21.9
percent shooting from the field en route to a 50-39 victory over
the Bearcats in WU’s NWC opener. Willamette shot 29 percent in the
first half and trailed by only three points at 27-24, but the
Bearcats shot a stone-cold 15.2 percent in the final 20 minutes.
The Lutes entered the game as the No. 1 team in the conference in
scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Bearcats got
11 points and four rebounds from Rosie Contri (Sr., Douglas HS,
Minden, Nev.) and nine points and five rebounds from Simmie Muth
(Jr., North Bend HS). On Monday, Muth was named NWC Player of the
Week after tallying 50 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and eight
steals in the three games.
NOTES: Willamette leads the NWC with 13.6 steals per game.
