Contri scores 19 in loss to Whitworth
SALEM — Whitworth went on a 15-0 run during a six minute span in the second half to take a commanding 53-39 lead with 7:48 remaining en route to a 68-58 Northwest Conference women’s basketball victory over Willamette in Cone Field House.
The victory improved the Pirates’ records to 17-6 overall and 11-3 in the NWC, while the Bearcats fell to 8-14 and 2-11, respectively.
Whitworth’s Kara Marusa, Danielle Wegman and Tiffany Speer provided all the scoring during the critical run. Willamette led 39-38 with 12 minutes remaining before Marusa triggered the spurt with a trey from above the free throw line.
The Pirates were led in scoring by Micki DesMarais, who scored 18 points and dished out four assists. Marusa added 14 points thanks to 3 of 5 shooting from three-point land and Speer added 10 points.
Whitworth shot 52.4 percent from the field in the second half after shooting just 32.0 percent in the initial 20 minutes. After making just 1 of 5 three-pointers in the first half, the Pirates converted 6 of 10 treys in the final 20 minutes.
The Bearcats got 19 points and six assists from Rosie Contri. Simmie Muth connected on 4 of 9 three-point shots on her way to a 14-point night.
