Swinn improves NCAA 'B' time in 100 backstroke

SPOKANE, Wash. — Several swimmers from Whitworth College and Willamette University took advantage of the Whitworth Last Chance Meet to improve their national qualifying standards.

Whitworth’s men’s and women’s 200-Yard Medley Relay’s both improved provisional national qualifying times.

The women’s team of Jillian Harbuz, Megan Lambuth, Serena Fadel and Kristen Satterfield completed the relay in 1:49.85, bettering their previous provisional time of 1:50.52 set at the Northwest Conference championships last weekend.

The Pirate men’s team of Ryan Freeman, Josh Andrew, Chris Holmes and Rhys Birky finished in a time of 1:34.01, improving the mark of 1:34.63 at last week’s conference meet.

Individually, three swimmers improved their national qualifying times. Willamette’s Eric Swinn completed the 100-Yard Backstroke in 51.79, improving on his school record and NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 52.14 set at the NWC championships. The automatic NCAA qualifying tme in that event is 51.49.

Whitworth’s Harbuz also improved a 100 backstroke time, finishing in 59.47. Her previous best was 1:00.17. And Whitworth’s Holmes improved his 100-Yard Butterfly time from 52.02 to 51.25.

The NCAA Women’s Division III Swimming and Diving Championships will take place March 13-15 at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The men’s meet will be March 20-22 at the same location.
