LAST WEEK: Willamette nearly upsets Puget Sound in Tacoma
Jan. 31 at Puget Sound 64, Willamette 59
Guard Abbie Unick (Jr., Ferndale HS, Wash.) had the best game of her college career Friday night and it was almost enough to lead Willamette to an upset at Puget Sound. Unick scored a career-high 15 points by converting all six of her shots from the field, including a trio from three-point range. She also dished out three assists in 26 minutes of play, but the Loggers prevailed to keep their conference championship hopes alive. UPS broke out to a 20-point lead (39-19) late in the first half before the visitors stormed back. The Bearcats closed the first half with a 9-0 run to climb to within 11 points, then took the lead during a 16-0 charge early in the second half. The Bearcats earned their first lead at 46-45 when Kasey Sorenson (Sr., Scappoose HS) scored at the 10:59 mark. WU led by as many as six points at 51-45 with 9:14 remaining following a three-pointer by Unick, but UPS battled back and took the lead for good when Jen McLuen’s basket broke a 59-59 deadlock with one minute remaining. Simmie Muth (Jr., North Bend HS) contributed 13 points, five steals and five assists for the Bearcats, while Deanna Lund (Jr., Ridgefield HS, Wash.) added 10 points.

NOTES: Individually, guard Rosie Contri (Sr., Douglas HS, Minden, Nev.) ranks 14th in the NWC in scoring (11.1 ppg), third in assists (3.28 apg), fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.09:1) and fifth in steals (2.22 spg). Forward Deanna Lund (Jr., Ridgefield HS, Wash.) ranks fifth in field goal percentage (44.5%), 10th in rebounding (6.1 rpg) and 12th in scoring (11.3 ppg). Guard Simmie Muth (Jr., North Bend HS) is second in steals (3.33 spg) and 15th in scoring (10.8 ppg).
