Bearcats complete sweep over Whitman
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Zach Vande Griend had a no-hitter going for six innings and ended up giving up just one run to lead Willamette to a 15-5 Northwest Conference victory at Whitman on Monday.
The win gave the Bearcats a three-game NWC sweep over the Missionaries and improved WU's records to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Vande Griend (2-4) struck out 10 Whitman batters over eight innings. He allowed just three hits and one walk.
Vande Griend got plenty of offensive support from his teammates. Drew Ecklund, Andy Bartels and Travis Shull each had four hits for Willamette. Shull, who had the game-winning hit in Sunday's second game, had five RBI on Monday.
The Bearcats have now won four straight games heading into their four-game homestand this coming weekend. WU hosts Oregon Tech on Friday (2:30 p.m.), before Whitworth comes to town for a three-game NWC series on Saturday and Sunday.
