Symmonds breaks 45-year-old school record in 800
EUGENE - Freshman Nick Symmonds broke the Willamette school record in the 800 meters Saturday, a record that had stood for the past 45 years.
Symmonds won the 800 during the Oregon Preview at Hayward Field in a time of 1:51.18. That time eclipsed the previous WU record of 1:51.94 set by Dale Hartman in 1958. Symmonds' time is also an automatic qualifier into the NCAA championships.
The Bearcat track teams had two other highlights in the Eugene meet. Junior Kari Holbert placed second overall in the 3,000 steeplechase in a time of 11:24.67 (NCAA provisional time).
Freshman Lindsey Patterson placed second in the long jump with a mark of 18-0 1/4, which ranks No. 5 all-time in Willamette history.
