UBC rallies to overtake Bearcats, 13-6
LEWISTON, Idaho - Willamette took early leads of 3-0 and 5-2 on Sunday in the consolation game of the Jiffy Lube Tournament, but the latter innings belonged to British Columbia as the Thunderbirds came away with a 13-6 victory.
The loss gave the Bearcats a 1-3 tournament record and put them at 5-7 for the season, heading into Tuesday's non-conference home game with Western Baptist (2 p.m.).
WU third baseman Andy Bartels led the Bearcat offense, going 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBI. His two-run home run to right-center in the bottom of the fifth gave Willamette its last lead of the game at 5-4.
UBC then scored two runs in the sixth, three more in the seventh and eighth, and one more in the ninth to close out its scoring.
Drew Ecklund went 2 for 5 with a stolen base for the Bearcats.
Willamette committed six errors in the game, leading to five unearned runs.
WU starter Mike Allen gave up eight hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings, and struck out one. But four errors behind him led to four unearned runs.
