RHP Zach Vande Griend (So., Salem Academy HS) and RHP Brian Gilmore
(So., McNary HS) combined on an eight-hitter to lead the Bearcats
to the victory. Vande Griend improved to 4-4 on the season by
striking out seven batters over eight innings. He allowed seven
hits and one walk, but the three runs scored against him were
unearned. Gilmore allowed only one hit in the ninth to pick up his
third save of the year. CF Drew Ecklund (Sr., San Luis Obispo HS,
Calif.) went 3 for 5 with two RBI to lead the WU offense.
-----Saturday, April 19: Willamette 4-2, at Pacific Lutheran

RHP Jeff Jensen (So., North Salem HS) tossed a two-hitter and CF
Drew Ecklund (Sr., San Luis Obispo HS, Calif.) went 4 for 5 with an
RBI to lead the Bearcats in the first game. Jensen struck out nine
and walked just one to improve his season record to 2-3. In the
nightcap, PLU scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth
inning to take a 3-2 lead. RHP Mike Allen (Fr., Ashland HS)
scattered 12 hits over eight innings and allowed one earned run. He
struck out six Lute batters. CF Drew Ecklund (Sr., San Luis Obispo
HS, Calif.) went 2 for 4 at the plate. In the three games, Ecklund
went 9 for 14 with four doubles and four RBI. For his pitching
performance in the first game, Jensen was named Northwest
Conference Pitcher of the Week.
NOTES: The Bearcats are 8-1 this season in 1-run games …
three players have started all 28 games for WU this season: RF Matt
Drahn (Jr., Taft HS); CF Drew Ecklund (Sr., San Luis Obispo HS,
Calif.); and SS Colin Griffin (Jr., Jesuit HS) … Ecklund has struck
out only five times in 125 at-bats, and he is batting .355 against
lefties and .394 against righties … Willamette pitchers have issued
only 68 walks in 253 innings this year, while striking out 189
batters. WU’s strikeout-to-walk ratio is an impressive 2.8:1, while
the opponent’s ratio is 1.6:1. WU batters have drawn 30 more walks
than the opposition, slightly more than one per game.
STATISTICS: As of April 21, Willamette was ranked second in the
Northwest Conference in team pitching (4.23), fourth in team
batting (.299) and ninth in team fielding (.927). Individually, CF
Drew Ecklund (Sr., San Luis Obispo HS, Calif.) is eighth in the
conference in batting at .384. RHP Jeff Jensen (So., North Salem
HS), RHP Zach Vande Griend (So., Salem Academy HS) and RHP Mike
Allen (Fr., Ashland HS) are fourth, seventh and 10th, respectively,
in NWC ERA at 3.38, 379 and 4.29. Jensen and Vande Griend are 2-3
in the NWC in strikeouts with 68 and 59, respectively.

baseball coach on Saturday, March 29 following Willamette’s sweep
of Whitworth (see below).

NOTE: The all-time school record for wins by a Willamette head coach was held by the late John Lewis until Saturday, March 29, when David Wong logged win No. 277. From 1948-72 (25 seasons), Lewis’ teams went 276-264 and won three Northwest Conference titles. Lewis also coached basketball at WU and served as athletic director. On Feb. 22, 2003, WU basketball coach Gordie James surpassed Lewis as Willamette’s all-time winningest basketball coach.
