The Bearcats solidified their hold on third place in the Northwest
Conference standings with a doubleheader sweep over fourth-place
Puget Sound. RHP Brittany Dearing (Fr., Casa Roble HS, Orangevale,
Calif.) pitched one-hit ball over six innings in the opener for the
Bearcats. She struck out two Loggers and issued no walks. LF Jen
Hammond (Jr., Catalina Foothills HS, Ariz.) went 2 for 3 with an
RBI to lead the Willamette offense. In the second game, Willamette
outhit UPS 11-3 and the game was shortened to five innings due to
the eight-run mercy rule. Bearcat RHP Teren Edgecomb (Jr., Puyallup
HS, Wash.) yielded just three hits and a walk over the five innings
and fanned one Logger batter. The Bearcats were led in the nightcap
by 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.), who went 4
for 4 with two runs and two RBI. 1B Hayley Boston (Sr., Newport HS)
went 2 for 4 with four RBI.

NWC HONORS: Hagen named NWC Hitter of the Week
3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) was named Northwest Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday after helping Willamette sweep Puget Sound. She went 5 for 7 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI in the two games. Hagen is leading the Bearcats in batting (.443), on-base percentage (.534), runs (19), hits (27), doubles (8), total bases (39), walks (12) and stolen bases (13).
NOTES:
Two players have started all 21 games for WU this season: C Darcy
Hertel (Sr., Madison HS) and 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr.,
Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) … UTL Kim Boscacci (Fr., Inglemoor
HS, Wash.) began 2003 expecting to red-shirt her first season at
Willamette, but due to injuries, she is not only playing but is
starting. As if that weren’t enough, she is second on the team in
batting (.438) and has 10 RBI in 12 starts … 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr.,
Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) has struck out just twice this
season in 61 at-bats, and has drawn 12 walks … in her first three
years, Hayley Boston (Sr., Newport HS) was the Bearcats’ top
pitcher, winning 37 games and posting an ERA of 2.13. This year,
she’s thrown just 3 2/3 innings, but has become one of the
Bearcats’ top hitters. Through 21 games, she is batting .388 with
five doubles, a home run and 12 RBI. The left-handed first baseman
also is 4 for 4 in the stolen base department.
STATISTICS:
As of April 7, Willamette was ranked second in the Northwest
Conference in team batting (.288), second in team fielding (.950)
and fifth in team pitching (3.74). Individually, UTL Kim Boscacci
(Fr., Inglemoor HS, Wash.) and 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr.,
Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) were second and ninth, respectively,
in the conference in batting at .483 and .407. RHP Nicole Romero
(So., R.L. Stevenson HS, Carmel, Calif.) is seventh in NWC ERA at
2.07. Hagen also leads the NWC in stolen bases with 13.
