LAST WEEK: Bearcats win four out of six Northwest Conference games to remain third

Damian Williams became the all-time win leader as a Willamette softball coach as the Bearcats swept a Northwest Conference doubleheader from George Fox. The two victories gave Williams, now in his fifth season at WU, a record of 82-81. The previous win record was held by Dave Just, whose teams went 80-105 from 1991-95. Williams got the record in the Bearcats’ opener, after pitcher Brittany Dearing (Fr., Casa Roble HS, Orangevale, Calif.) pitched three-hit ball over 6 1/3 innings. She struck out two and walked none. In the second game, Willamette put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on three hits, two walks, a hit batsmen and an error. 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) was 2 for 2 with a pair of stolen bases before leaving the game after taking a batted ball off the knee. Winning pitcher Teren Edgecomb (Jr., Puyallup HS, Wash.) allowed six hits but no walks over seven innings and struck out five Bruins. She helped her cause with a two-run single in the decisive sixth inning.
-----Friday, April 18: Willamette 2-4, at Whitworth 1-5
3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) went 2 for 3 with a run scored and pitchers Brittany Dearing (Fr., Casa Roble HS, Orangevale, Calif.) and Teren Edgecomb (Jr., Puyallup HS, Wash.) combined on a three-hitter as the Bearcats won the opener. In the second game, 1B Hayley Boston (Sr., Newport HS) hit a three-run triple to left field in the third inning.
-----Saturday, April 19: Willamette 1-0, at Whitworth 0-2
In the first game, Brittany Dearing (Fr., Casa Roble HS, Orangevale, Calif.) tossed a complete-game six-hitter, striking out one and issuing no walks to improve to 5-2 on the season. 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) went 3 for 3 with a run scored. In the nightcap, 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) and SS Kim Boscacci (Fr., Inglemoor HS, Wash.) each went 2 for 3 at the plate, but the Bearcats made four errors.


NOTES: Two players have started all 27 games for WU this season: C Darcy Hertel (Sr., Madison HS) and 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) … 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) has struck out just three times this season in 79 at-bats, and has drawn 12 walks.


STATISTICS: As of April 21, Willamette was ranked second in the Northwest Conference in team fielding (.953), third in team batting (.275) and fourth in team pitching (2.87). Individually, 3B Marcie Hagen (Jr., Marysville-Pilchuck HS, Wash.) and SS Kim Boscacci (Fr., Inglemoor HS, Wash.) are second and eighth, respectively, in the conference in batting at .468 and .396.
