LAST WEEK: Sorenson, Reece, Symmonds break WU records
A trio of Bearcats broke school records in two meets last Saturday. Kasey Sorenson (Sr., Scappoose HS) won the hammer at the Linfield Invitational with a throw of 150-1, breaking her own 2002 school record and exceeding the NCAA provisional mark of 147-8. At the Oregon Twilight in Eugene, Jazzmin Reece (Jr., Sehome HS, Wash.) and Nick Symmonds (Fr., Bishop Kelly HS, Idaho) each broke a WU record. Reece won the 100 hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 15.08, which broke last year's WU record of 15.13 set by Laura Leineweber. Just last week, Reece ran a 15.14 to win the Northwest Conference title. Symmonds won the prestigious Bill McChesney Jr. Memorial Twilight Mile in a time of 4:03.85. The time converts to a 3:45.81 in the 1,500, which automatically qualifies him for nationals and breaks the 1980 school record of David Fleming. Other Bearcats setting NCAA provisional marks in Eugene were: Brian Roesler (Jr., Portland Christian HS) in the 800 (1:53.08); Scott Overby (So., Barlow HS) in the 1,500 (3:55.04, converted from 4:13.82 mile); Brennan Garrelts (Fr., Roseburg HS) in the 110 hurdles (14.90); and Lindsey Patterson (Fr., Columbia River HS, Wash.) in the long jump (18-1).

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS, NOTES: The Bearcats won both the men and women’s side of the NWC Four-Way at George Fox on March 15 … Nick Symmonds (Fr., Bishop Kelly HS, Idaho) won the 800 in the Oregon Preview with a school-record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:51.18. The previous school record in that event had stood for 45 years after Dale Hartman ran a 1:51.94 in 1958 … in the second NCAA Division III power rankings of the season, the Willamette men are ranked No. 2 in the nation and the women are No. 3. The rankings are based on “overall team strength in a dual meet type scoring” against Division III competition … in the NWC Championship meet on April 25-26, the Bearcat women set or improved on 17 all-time WU top 10 marks, while the men set or improved on seven marks. The two teams defended both 2002 NWC championships, combined for 20 individual titles and Kelly Sullivan was named NWC Coach of the Year for both the men and women.
