NWC HONORS: Ecklund, Jensen named to all-conference first team
NWC HONORS: Ecklund, Jensen named to all-conference first
team
CF Drew Ecklund (Sr., San Luis Obispo HS, Calif.) and RHP Jeff
Jensen (So., North Salem HS) were both named to the Northwest
Conference first team all-star squad on Monday. Honorable mention
accolades went to RHP Zach Vande Griend (So., Salem Academy HS),
RHP Brian Gilmore (So., McNary HS) and DH/1B Jason Chatterton (Sr.,
Clackamas HS).
NOTES: The Bearcats were 10-1 this season in 1-run games … two
players started all 34 games for WU this season: RF Matt Drahn
(Jr., Taft HS) and SS Colin Griffin (Jr., Jesuit HS) … RHP Brian
Gilmore (So., McNary HS) finished the season with a 0.68 ERA, but
didn’t throw enough innings (1 inning for every game the team has
played) to qualify for NWC statistical leaders or the Willamette
single season ERA record (1.24, Abe Cohen, 1996). Gilmore threw
13.1 innings and allowed just one earned run.
STATISTICS: As of May 12, Willamette was ranked second in the
Northwest Conference in team pitching (4.14), fourth in team
batting (.302) and ninth in team fielding (.927). Individually, CF
Drew Ecklund (Sr., San Luis Obispo HS, Calif.) is fourth in the
conference in batting at .381. RHP Jeff Jensen (So., North Salem
HS) and RHP Zach Vande Griend (So., Salem Academy HS) are fourth
and seventh, respectively, in NWC ERA at 3.06 and 3.78. Jensen and
Vande Griend finished 2-3 in the NWC in strikeouts with 93 and 78,
respectively.

From 1948-72 (25 seasons), Lewis’ teams went 276-264 and won three Northwest Conference titles. Lewis also coached basketball at WU and served as athletic director.
