2003 MEN AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY SEASON GETS UNDERWAY...TEAM'S COMPETE IN TWO DIFFERENT MEETS OVER THE WEEKEND. MEN WIN TWICE, WHILE WOMEN WIN AT CENTRAL WASHINGTON

This past weekend, the #4 ranked men's team and #16 ranked women's cross country team's from Willamette University opened their 2003 season's by sending teams to two different meets.

The men split their two team's up pretty evenly and by doing so came away with a very rare 'double' win over the weekend.

The women also raced two team's. With one meet competing at 5000 meters and the other 4000 meters, the team's were split by experience and event's that folks run on the track.

Majority of the ladies that are more middle distance oriented competed in the meet that covered the 4k distance.

The men won on both sides despite holding out two-time NWC individual champion and two-time All-American, Aaron Young.

They also held out junior Scott Overby who placed 9th last spring in the NCAA 3000m steeplechase and junior Mark Welsh, who's been a top 7 runner for the Bearcats in the past.

Paul Thomas, a freshman who won a state title last spring in track from Idaho, was also held out this weekend.

The ladies ran the majority of their team that will be competing this fall, except for freshman transfer, Sarah Wood (Univ of Hawaii), junior Nicole Lindquist (off to New York for the weekend!), freshman Natalie Hatch (Idaho) and Mariah Mayfield (Ashland, Oregon)...On both sides, the two team's will not compete a handful of very talented freshman for a variety of reasons, so the future looks very bright!!

Overall the staff and team's were very pleased with the efforts at both venues. It is truly an exciting time for the two programs!!

The next meet for both team's will be Saturday, October 4th when Willamette hosts the Charles Bowles Willamette Invite at Bush Park here in Salem. Well over 65+ teams from as far away as Wisconsin (Marquette University) and Iowa (University of Iowa) will be attending!!
