Bearcat Men Defeat Lakeland 3-1 for First Win of the Season
SALEM — Ricardo Sanchez, Ben DeSanno and Kyle Gouveia all scored goals as the Willamette University men’s soccer team evened its season record at 1-1-1 with a 3-1 victory over Lakeland College (Wis.) Sunday afternoon at Sparks Field.
Sanchez put the Bearcats up early, scoring at the 7-minute mark off assists from DeSanno and midfielder Pat Wettach.
Lakeland responded just 22 seconds later when Mike Smolinski scored on a penalty kick.
DeSanno and Sanchez combined for the Bearcats second goal when DeSanno knocked in the rebound of a Sanchez shot to give the Bearcats a 2-1 edge at the 20-minute mark.
Gouveia scored just 5:40 into the second half when he converted an Adam Moshofsky pass for a 3-1 Bearcat lead. After that, the Bearcats packed in the defense and took home their first victory of the season.
For the game, the Bearcats outshot Lakeland 26-13. Goalie Dane Meier had seven saves for the Bearcats while Joe Silverberg had 11 for Lakeland.
The Bearcats next game is on the road when they meet Kalamazoo College in Colorado Springs on September 21.
