Bearcat Volleyball Wins in Four at Whitworth
Spokane, Wash. — The Willamette University volleyball team clawed to a 30-28, 27-30, 30-25, 30-26 victory over Whitworth College in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday evening in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The visiting Bearcats broke a two-match losing streak to improve to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the NWC. Whitworth fell to 7-9, 1-3.
Jenni Linden (pictured left) led all players with 20 kills, while fellow Bearcat Angie Sammons added 18 kills and hit .444 for the match. Whitworth was led by Katy Schrader's 16 kills, while Angie Florence added 12 kills and a match-high 21 digs.
Willamette rallied from a 17-14 deficit in the first game to take a 19-17 lead on a Pirate attack error. The Pirates retook the lead 26-24 on a Bearcat error, but Willamette closed the game on a 6-2 run.
Willamette looked to go up two games to none when a Pirate attack error gave the Bearcats a 23-19 lead. But the Pirates rallied with an 11-4 run, winning the game on consecutive attack errors by Linden.
The turning point of the match came with the Pirates leading 18-11 in the third game. The Bearcats came out of a timeout with eight straight points to grab the momentum. A kill by Linden gave Willamette the win in game three 30-25.
Katy Schrader's block gave Whitworth a 19-17 lead in the fourth game, but the Bearcats ran off five straight points to take a 22-19 lead on a kill by Linden. A Pirate attack error finally ended the match in the Bearcats favor.
