Bearcat Women Go to 4-0 With 4-2 Win Over Western Baptist
SALEM — Freshman striker Michelle Gregoire scored two goals late in the first half as the Willamette University women’s soccer team raised its season record to 4-0 with a 4-2 win over Western Baptist College.
After squandering several good scoring opportunities early, the Bearcats fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Sheena Darling with just under eight minutes in the first half. KeriAnn Rumrey and Meghan Cruz assisted on the play.
Two minutes later Gregoire tied the game off an assist from Susan Butler. Anne Merten fed Gregoire for her second goal just a minute before halftime.
Midfielder Naomi Baez scored the Bearcats third goal just a minute and a half into the second half when she took the ball down the right sideline and slid a shot past Western Baptist goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall.
Western Baptist pulled within one on a goal by Rumrey nine minutes into the second half.
But the Bearcats countered three minutes later when Brenna Hindman scored off assists from Gregoire and Laura Uhlmansiek.
For the game, the Bearcats outshot Western Baptist 20-3. Mendenhall had nine saves.
Willamette’s next game is at home next Sunday against Lakeland College (Wis.).
