Bearcat Women Open NWC Play With 3-1 Road Win Over Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Michelle Gregoire's second-half goal carried No. 8 Willamette to a 3-1 Northwest Conference women's soccer victory over previously unbeaten Linfield Wednesday afternoon at the Linfield soccer field.

The teams entered their Northwest Conference opener with identical 5-0 records, and it was the defending co-champion Bearcats who emerged victorious.

Brenna Hindman scored the lone goal of the first half 10 minutes into the match, beating Wildcats goalkeeper Lynnette Adams with a low shot to the right side from nine yards out. Willamette outshot the hosts 11-1 during the first 45 minutes as Adams was forced to make three first-half saves.

Linfield pulled even at 1-1 in the 55th minute. Sara Williams scored on a penalty kick after the Bearcats were whistled for a hands ball inside the penalty area.

The contest remained tied until the 68th minute when Gregoire found the lower left corner of the net, taking a feed from Naomi Baez and putting it past Adams.

Willamette's Nicole Dahl (pictured above) added an insurance goal at 85:49 with a hard blast to the lower right side. For the match, the Bearcats held an 18-6 advantage in shots.

WU freshman goalie Kari Woody was steady throughout, making two saves behind a Bearcat defense led by Kara Forsyth, Joelle Muchlinski, Stacy Clarke and Cayly Christensen.

The Bearcats continue their first road trip of the season with a pair of conference games at Pacific on Saturday and George Fox on Sunday. Both games begin at noon.
