Bearcats Go to 5-0 With Easy Win Over Lakeland
SALEM — Anne Merten scored two early goals and assisted on another as the Willamette University women’s soccer team beat Lakeland College (Wis.) 9-0 Sunday afternoon at Sparks Field.
Merten scored at the 2:35 mark of the first half, then again at the 24-minute mark. Brenna Hindman and Susan Butler got the assists on Merten’s goals.
Merten then returned the favor to Butler, assisting on the freshman midfielder’s goal at the 36:18 mark for a 3-0 Bearcat lead.
Merten then left the game with a knee injury and did not return.
In the second half, the Bearcats got goals from Hindman, Michelle Gregoire, Jessica Lammers, Naomi Baez, Nicole Dahl and Allison Tenold to coast to the easy victory.
For the game, the Bearcats outshot Lakeland 34-7. Lakeland goalie Allie Weiss had 13 saves. Three Bearcat freshmen — Kristin Muramoto, Lisa Tollenaar and Elizabeth Ellsworth combined for the shutout.
The Bearcats do not play again until September 24 when they travel to Linfield for their first Northwest Conference game, and their first game on the road.
