Bearcat Men Tie George Fox 1-1
SALEM — In the first-ever soccer match played on artificial turf at McCulloch Stadium, Willamette senior Ben DeSanno scored a second half goal as the Bearcats (6-6-3, 5-4-1 NWC) and the George Fox Bruins (4-9-2, 1-7-2 NWC) played to a 1-1 draw in a Northwest Conference game Saturday afternoon.
Late in the first half, the Bruins' Jason Kinter gave George Fox a 1-0 lead when he chipped in a shot in front of the goal at the 41:12 mark. Ben Eichenberger and Andrew Paine got credit for the assists as they kept the ball alive in front of the Bearcat goal.
DeSanno (pictured left)answered with just under ten minutes to play, converting passes from Pat Wettach and Adam Moshofsky into the game-tying goal.
The teams played two scoreless overtime periods. The Bearcats had several good chances to score, but Bruin goalie Ron Besser kept Willamette from the winning goal. Besser also had two diving saves in the first half.
For the game, the Bruins got off 20 shots to the Bearcats 19. Willamette goalie Dane Meier had five saves in the match. Besser had eight saves.
The Bearcats host Pacific Sunday afternoon in another match at McCulloch Stadium. Game time is 1:30 pm (note time change).
