Bearcat Rower Lopaka Purdy, Studying in Laussane, Switzerland, to Work at The Summer Olympics, 2004
Lopaka Purdy, a junior dual french and international studies major and rower at Willamette is studying abroad in Switzerland this year.
He won a prestigious $3,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which is awarded to only a couple of Willamette students. The scholarship will allow him to complete a film documentary on what European students think of American foreign policy, culture, and politics.
Purdy will also be working in Athen's Greece next summer for the Olympic Committee. The committee was impressed that he applied in person and let him know that he would be working in either media or crew events and possibly in the main Olympic stadium.
Purdy will return next year as a senior and begin training with Willamette rowing again.
This weekend WU Crew will see action in Portland in a fall head race vs PLU, UPS, Lewis and Clark, and PSU.
